Detroit's Friend Of The Court ripoff How many single parents need to continue to complain before something is done? Detroit Michigan

My ex-husband and I were married in Atlanta. Upon separation and eventual divorce, I re-located to Detroit, where my mother resides. I divorced him in Detroit. I contacted the Office of the Friend of the Court and successfully received my first payment earlier this year for unpaid child support after waiting over 18 years to locate my ex-husband.

Unfortunately, I only received one payment to date this year (February, 2004) in the amount of $150.00 for back pay.

Due to illness and unemployment, I re-located to my birthplace, Buffalo, NY 1 1/2 years ago with my daughter (my oldest is now grown and never received child support while living with me).

It was neccessary to contact Michigan's Attorney General for reinforcement of child support because I could not get through, after making several attempts via long distance phone calls, to communicate with the Friend of the Court located in Detroit.

I also submitted several letters to no avail. It is now April and I understand that my ex-husband's wages are being garnished for unpaid child support. WHERE IS THE MONEY? IT CERTAINLY IS NOT COMING TO THE NY STATE OFFICE OF CHILD SUPPORT--AND IT DEFINATELY IS NOT COMING TO OUR RESIDENCE!!!

The State Of Michigan should investigate these types of matters. How many single parents need to continue to complain before something is done?

I believe the theives who are holding certain positions at Detroit's Friend of the Court, who cause delay (or delete) support payments ordered by Michigan's judicial system should be investigated and consequently be removed from their positions for stealing money from those who are "entitled" to recieve child support!

MAYOR KWAMI, I VOTED FOR YOU BEFORE I LEFT, HELP US!!!

If your ex is getting her $ and the child support and you're still getting money back.. You probably have overpaid your account... When they started taking payments, was there a payment for arrearage? If so, maybe you're caught up now and they need just sending back the payment towards the arrearage.. They need to decrease your withholding to current... I know some people who had success with emailing FOC... The email address is foc-help@3cc.co.wayne.mi.us .. Give it a try..

Agreed - Wayne County FOC is worthless!

I too have had problems with the FOC process here in Michigan. I have yet had any luck getting anyone "live" to speak to in their office. I am the "non-custodial" parent who is current on both child support and alimony payments. However, I started receiving checks from the FOC last year. I have tried to contact them via phone, letter and fax. I want to know why I am receiving these checks as I am the one paying into the FOC. My ex is receiving her payments for both herself and my child. I feel I have been overpaying but I cannot get that confirmed with the FOC. I am afraid they are going to send me a bill sometime in the future indicating they erred in sending me all these checks. I have copies of everything and will also be writing to the michigan Judicial Oversight Committee. It is a shame that those who are making the payments on time cannot receive any form of customer service from the state (aside from NO-Service).

Dear Sean,

Thanks for the rebuttal. One of the first things I did after relocating was to send a letter to Detroit's Friend of the Court advising them (at least 3x) of my new address and telephone number.

The only response I received to date was a letter indicating that the information was received and that the matter was being looked into. That was almost two years ago.

Since I wrote you last, a payment suddenly appeared in my mailbox the following week for $300+. I'm not sure if it is because of my comment/complaint or not.

I thank the friend of the Court for doing their job.

Hopefully, this is the onset of future payments to come. If not, I will definately advise you.

maybe Friend of the Court doesn't have your current address

Have you ever though with all you moving, maybe Friend of the Court doesn't have your current address. Sometimes you get a check, then the next one get's sent back to FOC for some reason, then they hold all future checks until you verify your address.
