Complaint Review: DeVry University

DeVry University DeVry University Online June 2013 I was scheduled to graduate, however I was told I had maxed out my financial aid. Instead of getting my Associates Degree, I have gotten $64,000.00 in debt, no degree, no transcripts, and no certification. DeVry said they will not release either one until I pay $2,000.00 very soon, they did not give an exact date because the woman didn’t know when it would go to collection, and they would release one transcript. This whole fiasco started in April 2013 when I received an email stating “Documents were missing.” When I call the Financial Aid (FA) they told me I had not completed my FAFSA, so the young lady talked me through it. After we completed it I asked her did I qualify and she said I would receive an email on my qualifications. I then spoke to her about grants and scholarships to help further my education. She sent me an email with websites to apply for funding.

On April 6, 2013 I received an email stating there was a hold on my account. I called the FA on April 8, 2013 and I was told that I had no more funding and that I should use the website I was given on April 1st to find a grant, scholarship, or loan.

The third week of April the student advisory called to setup my practicum. I explained to them what was going on, and they told me as soon as they register me for classes the funds would be released, right now it looks like you are enrolled less than part-time. After speaking with them I called the FA and requested a conference call between FA and student advisory. The woman in student advisory told FA the same thing she told me. FA requested that student advisory call them when they finished my enrollment.

On April 26, 2013 I received an email from student advisory confirming my enrollment. I also received one from FA informing there was a hold on my account.

On May 3, 2013 and May 13, 2013 I received a notice that funds in the amount of $186.00 were disbursed to my account. On May 16, 2013 I received a bill in the amount of $4,030.00. I called the FA and requested to know how I owed them that money. The FA told me I had run out of funds and $186.00 was all that was left. I told them I did not have that type of money and asked if there was some kind of assistance when this happens. The FA told me to get a cosigner and if my cosigner and I were turned down twice, then they would assist me. I told them that does not make sense. Every time a creditor looks at your credit report, the score goes down. FA told me I had no other choice.

June 29, 2013 was the day I was supposed to graduate. I called FA trying to find solutions to this problem. The young man on the phone was no help. All he kept saying was, “I understand.” At the end of the call he told me someone would be calling me and he suggested I do what these people say.

On August 2, 2013 I called FA and asked, “when will someone be getting back with me.” I explained to the woman on the phone what I was told in June. She said, “the people that will be contacting you is the Credit Office for delinquency.” Then she went to say, “If you can get $2000.00 here ASAP we will let you have one transcript,” As you can see the financial aid department is no help.

I hope your post will serve as a warning to other students (at ALL colleges) that you MUST understand how financial works before you enroll.

Federal financial aid has limits depending on your year in school and how much you've already received (among other variables). The FA office told you in April that you were out of funds. So you reached your limit and were instructed to find other sources of loans, etc.

Once your enrollment went over part time, you were responsible for any tuition balance over the $186 you still were entitled to.  Why is that so hard to understand?

You ARE responsible for that remaining balance, and they probably won't release your transcripts until you pay it.

I'm sorry this happened to you, but it's your responsibility to understand how it all works.
