Friday, Feb.27 2009 at about 3p.m. in Laguna Beach, California two young women late teen/early twenties posed as U.S.C. students raising money for March 3 trip to Spain. Claimed to be neighbors (thrust hand in my face and aggressively entered house) and story was needed "just a little sale to complete money for trip of lifetime". Claimed to be daughter of neighbor doctor (no address/just Nyes Place) and mother a doctor and invited me to go along and drink wine with mother who was part of trip. Also claimed to be raising money for charity/would receive a tax deductible 50l C form in 6 weeks.
She did not give me other neighbor names but said was making rounds and one woman had even offered her a grilled cheese sandwich. Also said her mother would arrive at my door that night with wine/cheese basket. Claimed her friend (Asian) was a scholarship student and both were communications majors at USC. Said many neighbors not at home. After giving her a check she asked to use the bathroom. I got very suspicious then. She shoved a receipt at me for $44 after I gave her a check for $l76! She also predated the sale to 2/22/09 and I noted that company has a 3 day cancel window so that explained part of her strategy. I immediately called company to cancel and no return call after 3 trys. I also called my bank and stopped payment on check. Her name is illegible. BEWARE ANY DOOR TO DOOR SOLICITORS SELLING ANYTHING EVEN IF THEY CLAIM TO BE MEETING NEIGHBORS FOR A CAUSE. TOTAL SCAM.
