DirecTv is having problems keeping people so they are using tricks to keep you on a contract. Los Angeles California
DirecTV 8/30/06
I called direct TV a few days earlier and asked them of upgrading my standard receiver to a DVR and what the cost would be. I was told no charge increase at all. I purchased the DVR at Costco installed it and called DirecTV to program the new DRV. After about 10 mins. of service I was told I would now have too agree to a new two-year contract.
I asked why when I paid for the receiver. I connected the system up and I'm already paying for the service and they did nothing at all. They stated that's our policy. Well the DVR is now going back to Costco and I'm now looking into other satellite services or cable.
I guess DirecTV is having problems keeping people so they are using tricks to keep you on a contract.

As stated before, I purchased it at Costco ($89.00) and was returning it. As you stated (It sounds as thought the representatives at DirecTV were very well informed and forthright by informing you of the commitment, rather than not saying anything and "tricking" you into staying around for 2 years. Well Your Wrong this time, they never stated a new two year contract was required until after everything was done. The trick.
Good news, I'm now with a new service with ALL New equipment, more channels, and now with HD-DVR / standard DVR and standard HD receiver all with the HBO package for only $9.99 more a month. I now want to thank DirecTV for opening my eyes and making me do a little research. The Lesson here for me is never stop shopping, there's always somebody looking for your new business. The bad news, I did sign a new contract but it was not two years.
Thanks

DirecTV Lies and More Lies

My daughter purchased a new Tivo system for my DirecTV earlier this year from a retail store because the old one wasn't working. BEFORE I hooked it up, I contacted DirecTV and asked if I was extending my contract. Three times. All three times the response was NO.
My service was never perfect, but it gradually got so bad I was without any television for over a week. I contacted a cable company and had them install their system. I called and cancelled DirecTV. I was told I could either "give them" my new Tivo system OR I could pay them $300.00.
No one has ever said the equipment was "leased" versus "purchased" (my daughter wouldn't have purchased the item as a lease). I don't think so. Twice I sent emails and asked for the mailing address, telephone numbers and fax numbers of the head honchos and twice I was told they could not/would not provide that information.
I'm thinking maybe they will tell the Attorney General's office the addresses and telephone/fax numbers I requested.

First off you may want to make sure that you "purchased" the dvr. As of March of this year, Directv (and their retailers) started leasing equipment, rather than selling it. In doing so they stopped subsidizing the cost of equipment and installation for "owned" receivers.
The upgrade cost of a dvr is about $99. So you may have actually spent the money to upgrade to a "leased" not "owned" dvr.
It sounds as thought the representatives at Directv were very well informed and forthright by informing you of the commitment, rather than not saying anything and "tricking" you into staying around for 2 years.
