We have been customers of DirecTV for 9 years. At first, when something went wrong with their service, they sent someone out to fix the problem. After that, you didn't get repair service unless you paid extra.

Lately, they have no repair service even though we paid $5.99 amonth extra for a "Protection Plan". My DVR box went out and they would only send a replacement in about 3 days. So not only am I doing all the work for them, and have no TV, I have to box up the defective receiver and return it to them by FedEx within 7 days or be charged $400. Also I would have to call them when I got it all connected, deal with the automated answering, and get someone to activate it.

We decided to discontinue service with them. I called to make sure we were not obligated in any way, and was told that we were not at this time under any obligation.

When we called back to discontinue, we were told that we were under contract(which we knew nothing about) and to cancel we had to pay $380. for not fulfilling our obligation. At this point we definitely did not want their service, so we told them just cut us off (we haven't had TV for 3 days anyway) and send us the bill. We will just pay it to get away from them.

To anyone considering connecting to DirecTV, I would read carefully all conditions of their contracts. You may be O.K. until you need service. From our experience, they don't service their faulty equipment.

The ripoff?

So you had to send the receiver back and you had to call to activate the receiver... boohoo. You weren't even ripped off, you were just upset with the time it took to replace a box.

The only thing DirecTV does I don't like is when you get a new receiver it extends your contract for 2 years. Personally I think that's silly... but other than that there was no ripoff here.
