I could also say that this is common practice at all bars, restaurants and gas stations but I think, "duh" says it all.

I think you'll find that this is common at most bars that allow you to run a tab. They need to preauthorize some amount when they initially run your card. This is to make sure you're going to have sufficient funds to cover the average tab amount. They could just put a hold for $1, but then they risk you not having enough money/credit to cover the actual amount when they submit the final total.
