Complaint Review: Dollar Car Rental

I decided to save money on a recent trip and made arrangements to rent a car, using my AAA discount, and found after checking that Dollar had the best rate, for one week, with unlimited mileage.  I had to wait an extra day to get the car, in order to get the discounted rate.  At the time I rented it, I got some collision insurance coverage as my own policy did not have this.  At that point, they upgraded the car to one a little bigger.  I unfortunately did not check to see what I was paying for this vehicle and thought that I was getting it for the same rate. 

I was shocked to discover on my credit card bill that I paid almost $200 more than I was originally supposed to have paid.  Although I had other reasons for driving to my destination, I could have flown for the same amount of money or even less.  Apparently Dollar is known for doing this kind of crap, charging more for the car than what the person thinks they are going to have to pay. 

A lot of the complaints seem to come from Florida, too.  Every one of the people who has complained about this company has said they will never rent from Dollar again.  I have just joined their ranks.  I'll take a train or bus if I need to travel by land, in the future.  At least Greyhound doesn't rip off their customers.  I cannot help but wonder if AAA is in league with their practices, as they promote Hertz for rental cards and that is the parent company of Dollar.  Needless to say, I will never go a AAA sponsored car rental agency in the future, either, and will be careful about the businesses that they offer "discounts" at, one of which is a car repair shop that I gone to in the past, and I now believe is starting to milk me.
