This could be a case of mail fraud.....

Dennis,

You weren't very clear in your description of the scheme. Did the people assure you that you could make money stuffing envelopes? It sounds like that scam with what little you told us. The scheme is, if I'm right:

You receive a mailing or see an ad that touts, "Make $1,000's stuffing envelopes!" You write or call and they ask for money for the necessary package, which is a whole lot of nothing. What you receive is either nothing or instructions to take out your own ad or send out your own mailings. It's mail fraud; it's illegal.

Report these people to the postal inspection service. Go to http://www.usps.gov/websites/depart/inspect/ and file an online complaint.

Pull your cancelled chaeck and trace the checking account where it was deposited or cashed. Your bank can tell you where that bank is. Once you have that information you can call the police in that town and report the fraudsters. The police can find out who owns that account.

Tell the fraudsters you intend to do these two things and demand your money back in full.

Good Luck!
