I could have written your exact story, I even think we had the same sales guy! He was such a smooth talker and I felt totally cheated after he left and I'd written him a $50 check for a kids magazine! I cancelled the next day. Two months, 2 faxes, 10 phone calls later I received my refund check. Please don't give up - keep hounding these people until they get you a refund. I'm reporting them to authorities too.
