When I got my laptop I signed up for Earthlink dial up because I do travel quite a bit. At home I have DSL but on the road dial up is the only choice.

I picked Earthlink because they offer an unlimted number of hours for $20/month and they had access numbers all over. My main desire was to get access in Mexico, which they did.

In November of 2003 I used 56 hours of dial up from Mexico and I got a bill for $527. At first I thought it was an error. The digging through Earthlink's web site I found the small print with a dim font indicatting the $0.15/minute fee for international (outside the US and Canada) access.

I exchanged some emails with Earthlink. Initially they said the bill was an error. Then they renaged. They did charge my credit card the $527 making it the most expensive dial up service I've ever heard of.

Sadly, I was not aware of Earthlink's deceptive tactics before I signed up.

I hope other consumers learn about their ISP practices before they find out the hard way like I did.
