Copy of correspondence between myself and Tina Davis, Associate Registrar, Eastern Kentucky University. Cc's sent to University President and other office "assistant"...(Begin from bottom, some info removed to protect from "spammers")

Sorry I don't subscribe to the "Colonel's Compass", And I didn't want to have to sift thru a myriad of bland webpages to get this important information. That's why after doing a quick search via your homepage searchbox of "late fees" and "registration fees" and nothing came up, I came to your office to inquire... Of course it seems your deskworkers don't like to have to sift either, so they just told me about the "refund schedule", or,... maybe they just did as they were instructed???

Actually I have heard of it Tina, that's why I was searching for it duh! You guys have hit me up with it underhandedly once before (like my first semester or something) But unlike this time when I called beforehand at least I got a (vague) answer as to when it was, so any late registering was (theoretically) "my fault". No need for details here, you wouldn't listen anyway.

When I inquired this time, and got no mention of it, I allowed myself to drift into a false feeling of hope for eku, thinking they may have did away with the venal ways of old. I guess some things never change....

Thank for the best wishes Tina! I now have a surprise for you! :-)

Shawn

Shawn,

I am sorry that you were unaware of the Late Registration Fee. It is explained in the Colonel's Compass in the Registration Procedures sections as well as being listed on the calendar pages of that same publication. An easy link to this online publication is from the Schedule of Classes link on the EKU homepage www.eku.edu.

This Late Registration fee has been in place, and has been $50, since at least 1983. If you have been at EKU for several years I am surprised that you have not been aware of it. It may simply be that you have never before registered late.

Congratulation on your recent graduation and best wishes for your future endeavors.

Tina,

NO matter how you try to spin this, it is still complete and utter BS -pure and simple.

No mention was made of it when I was in your office asking how long I had to register "without accumulating fees". I was only told about the refund schedule. It is also conveniently withheld from any searches on your webpage of "late fees" or "registration fees" -The only thing that pops up again is your "registration fee refund schedule" I wonder why this is??? Can you answer that???

Luckily I finished my degree over the summer and am not required to be taking any classes at eku. In the future I will choose a university that doesn't result to such lowhanded tactics to extort money from unsuspecting students...

I will also be happy to make this known to as many as possible.

Thanks a lot,

Shawn

Shawn Mark Long,

Your email has been forwarded to me. I am happy to answer your questions. The Late Registration fee is assessed to encourage student to register before the first day of classes. This is very important as the university must be good stewards of its resources, and to that end knowing where to allocate departmental resources is dependent upon course enrollments. It is vital that the university have a "firm" picture of term enrollments as soon as possible, and most certainly before the first day of class.

Yes, if you were to drop your classes during the first week of classes the university would generously provide a 100% tuition refund. However the Late Registration Fee is a non-refundable fee, not tuition. Think of it like a parking fine, if you dropped your classes but had parked illegally you would not expect the university to forgive or refund any parking fines? Likewise any fees assessed are not refunded as these are usually for incidents that have already occurred or resources already allocated.

I hope this clarifies the situation. Should you have any other questions or registration needs please do not hesitate to drop by the Registrar's Office.

Best wishes,

Tina Davis

Name: Shawn
Telephone: (removed)

Hello,

I would like to appeal the $50 \"late registration fee\" which has been assessed to my account. The reason for this is the online calendar/schedule that I was going by stated that I could receive a full 100% refund of all tuition if I had requested so by August 28.
According to your records I registered for my classes August 25. Yet I am assessed a $50 \"late fee\" simply by \"registering\". I didn\'t want to withdraw from my classes, but according to your protocol, I could have saved myself $50 by turning around and withdrawing 3 days later.

How does this make sense???

Please look into this.

My name:

Shawn

Thank you.
