Saw 1997 Honda Prelude advertised on Crais list. Emailed owner, Gloria Peterson, and she emailed me numerous photos of car sayin her husband drove truck commercially, and could deliver car. I needed a Money Gram sent to Ebay Motor Protection Program.

Was sent a notice from Ebay Motors with information on her Ebay standings. All looked good and legitimate.

Sent money, Ebay motors confirmed money had arrived and needed 24 - 48 hrs to process. Gloria Peterson emailed and said she had recieved email from Ebay motors and would prepare for shipping, and would send me a tracking number.

This was the last I heard from any one on this transaction, Wed May 5 2010.

i am now out  $2340.00 the last of my money to get back and forth to a job I finally landed, now it looks like my children and I will be living out on the streets next month due to the fact I lost the job due to no transportation.

I am physically sick that I was so gullable. I have all email corresponences saved between us.

Secure Online Purchase

Great post. Perhaps I can just add to this that the best way to guard against being ripped off by online sales or auctions of any kind, Craigslist and eBay includedand whether seller or buyeris to use a *bona fide* online escrow company. Especially for pricier items like antiques, jewelry and autos. Although it does add some cost, it takes the uncertainty out of the transaction, and thats a small price to pay for peace of mind. For my money, the best bona fide online escrow (and there seems to be ten fraudulent escrow sites for every bona fide one) is probably Escrow.com (http://escrow.com). In fact, its the only one that eBay recommends, and is the only online escrow company that is licensed to provide escrow services all across the United States. Take care, Ulf Wolf

Wrong area code

Yeah they got you and it's to bad.

I live in the Houston area and that appears to be a office building however (409) is not a Houston area code. That is in the Beaumont, Tx area which is east of Houston.

The name ,address and phone numbers are lies too...

If the scammer is slick enough to get you to wire over $2000.00 for a car you have never seen, test driven or inspected..one would think he was slick enough to give a fake name, address and fax number.

Sometimes they will have an actual phone, but all they need to do is buy a 10 dollar pay as you go cell phone,, and it is untraceable to whomever bought it since no personal information is required to activate it. They toss it away when the scam is completed.

Email accounts as well..free and require no verification to open one.

We all hope the best for you, and that at maybe some others can avoid this by exposing it here and anywhere else possible.

eBay Motors had nothing to do with it...

In fact, eBay Motors does not and has never had a program to cover purchases made through Craigslist. Unfortunately, you fell for a variation of the 419 scam.  The best thing you can do now is to contact the financial crimes unit of the Secret Service though you are not likely to recover the money.

This was NOT ebay motors...

Common scam. You and ebay motors were both defrauded.

What you were emailed is a phony notice/invoice where the scammer simply copy and paste an ebay motors logo in the email..and link it to a counterfeit ebay motors looking site in which you are instructed to wire money.

Since ebay and ebay motors to not approve of wiring money, it was impossible that they instructed you to do so. The scammer simply used ebay motors logo to give it a sense of legitimacy, and fool you.

If you wired money, unfortunately it is untraceable, non refundable, and you have no recourse with ebay motors (since they were not involved) or western union.

You can call the police and FBI to report the fraud but most likely the scammer is long gone with your money.

Unfortunately these scammers also give craigslist a bad name as well..even though when you go on craigslist under cars/trucks..it say right on top in huge writing that ALL requests to wire money are 100% FRAUDULENT. I don't know how anyone misses this, but we read about this all the time here. There was never any honda prelude for sale..and if there was and it was a great price, why wouldn't they be able to find someone local to pick it up..why would they need to deliver it..you know how much gas costs?? Craigslist is best for local buying only since  they offer no real protection from scams.

Main lesson, never wire money unless you know who it is going to personally.

Ebay Motors had nothing to do with this-you were scammed!

Sorry about your money and your job-but you were scammed. They sent you to a fake Ebay Motors website. If you google "craigslist ebay motors scam", you will see this is a scam. Ebay has NOTHING to do with Craigslist. If a seller says they do, run!

$2,340 for a 1997 Honda? The scammers usually scam with a Honda Accord or other car for an UNBELIEVABLE price!

Also, NEVER send money via Western Union and buy a car locally.

Hi, first I want to say I feel for you, and you will never see your money.

Craigs list has nothing to do with Ebay motors.  Ebay Motors does not have a warehouse.  Craigs list and ebay are competitors and unless one buys the other, there is not a link between companies.

Do you know how many people almost got caught up in this scam?  Lots of people in your position go on ebay and ask users about this scam.

If google "Craigs list Ebay motors scam" you will see how common this scam is.

You live and learn.
