Edenpure heater
Sun Twin heater

Beware of that heater. It's extremely overpriced, and the advertising is misleading and incomplete. From the information supplied, it's an electric heater that uses a quartz heating element to generate heat, and is housed inside a cabinet that does not get overly hot. It uses a fan to circulate hot air around the room and aids in keeping the cabinet cool. The fact that the outside of the cabinet stays relatively cool is a plus, since burns and fires can indeed occur from electric heaters that have hot outer surfaces, or are placed too close to combustible materials.

Also, fires can occur when clothing and sheets are draped over heaters by accident.

The advertising for the EdenPure does not state the wattage or BTU rating, which is suspicious. They apparently don't want potential buyers to comparison shop based on the wattage rating and price. However, since it does plug into a "110" volt household circuit, the power consumption ( and heat output) is probably no more than 1500 watts , which puts the amperage draw at about 13 amps , (assuming an actual 117 volt circuit.) Most household 110 volt devices draw no more than about 13 amps, since more current will start blowing fuses and tripping circuit breakers. At $397, that's a very expensive 1500 watt electric heater, since other types are priced between $20 and $65 . There are other electric heaters that stay relatively cool on the outside; small units with ceramic heating elements and fans stay cool, and will only overheat if the air flow is blocked by furniture placed too closely, or by clothing draped over the unit. All electric heaters have thermostats that should keep them from overheating, although you have to trust that the thermostat will function quickly and reliably.

The type of heating element is actually not significant for a convection heater, whether it's a Ni-Cad hot wire, ceramic, or quartz. ( For a purely radiant spot heater, the quartz heating elements do work well.) All electric room heaters are essentially 100% efficient ,although radiant heaters are best for spot heating, and convection heaters, with or without fans, are better for room or area heating. (Convection heating means that warm air circulates around the room, either by a fan or by hot air rising without a fan.)

The advertising for the EdenPURE also implies that their heater alone does not reduce room humidity, does not use up room oxygen, and does not generate carbon monoxide. Actually, no electric room heater does any of those things. Room absolute humidity is not affected by a heater, but relative humidity (dependent on air temperature) will be reduced by all heaters. No electric heater uses up room oxygen, as can propane, natural gas, or kerosene heaters that draw their combustion air from the room. No electric heaters generate carbon monoxide, as can propane, natural gas, or kerosene heaters that are not vented with a chimney to the outside.

So, for nearly $400, you're not getting anything special with the EdenPURE. I use electric oil filled radiators for keeping small areas warmer than the rest of my house. They're a bit bulkier than most other electric heaters, but they're completely silent, and the surface temperature stays low enough to avoid burns and fires. They should not be covered with clothing or other objects, however, since that may cause them to overheat. A radiator unit with 600, 900, and 1500 watt settings costs about $60. A ceramic element heater with a fan of the same wattage rating is priced at about $20 to $30.
This unit is also offered in full-page ads by Biotech Research.

As the above rebuttal states, all electric heaters work the same principles...converting electricity into heat...but I would have to disagree with PaperProphet.

Turning on halogen lamps and watching television does, essentially, create the same amout of heat as one of these EdenPURE heaters, however, the dispersion is not the same.  I can sit across the room and watch television, but I don't feel the heat from it.  Since it is impractical to mount a blower fan to my television or lamps, I would rather spend the money on a heating solution that creates warmth throughout the entire room.  With an EdenPURE Gen3, the entire room gets warm...not just the area around lamps and televisions.

We have utilized many methods of heating and have yet to find anything that is more cost effective with great product quality than the EdenPURE brand name.  We have replaced natural gas heating and large floor-level electrical heating units with these heaters and have seen not just the total bills decline, but the whole room gets warmer faster.

In the original report above, the author mentions how "The advertising for the EdenPURE also implies that their heater alone does not reduce room humidity, does not use up room oxygen, and does not generate carbon monoxide. Actually, no electric room heater does any of those things." ...  I am partial to believe that the author misinterpreted this fact by comparing EdenPURE heaters with other ELECTRIC heaters.  I believe the author would understand better if he were to think of this fact as EdenPURE's being compared to gas, water, and fireplace based heating, which is how I personally understood the advertising.

As for the heaters themselves, I have found them to be deserving of their credability and will continue to use them as long as the product quality stays superior.

Heating with the Edenpure

#6Consumer Suggestion

Fri, November 26, 2010

To address both the comment and the rebuttal, I agree that the marketing of the Edenpure was a little disingenuous but in some cases a space heater might actually save a little money.

Here's what you need to know: All electric heaters are the same--they all completely convert electricity into heat with 100% efficiency. That's the conservation of energy law. In fact, keeping three 400W halogen torch lamps and a TV constantly on in the room will give you the same heating for the same electric cost as the Edenpure, while providing light and entertainment as an added bonus.

The high cost of heating with electricity is a concern.  In my typical area, the cost of producing a BTU of heat from electricity costs about 2.5X as much as the cost of a BTU of heat produced by burning natural gas. One of the points showcased in the infomercial was that in poorly-designed homes, vents can go through uninsulated attics and crawl spaces. Yes that is true--but even in those inefficient homes, the large difference in the price of electric vs natural gas allows for significant margin in favor of not using an electric heater.

The point about zone heating was also made in the infomercial, essentially heating one heavily-used room while allowing the rest of the house to stay cooler. This can make some sense. To do the math, heat loss is directly proportional to the difference in temperature between the inside of the house and the outside. If the average temperature outside is 20F, it actually uses 20% less energy to heat a house to 60F instead of 70F. A space heater (any type of space heater) for a single high-use room might save a little money if it means keeping the rest of the house cooler, possibly even if an electric heater is used. However the testimontials of people siggesting they were saving hundreds per month on their utility bills were undoubtedly highly exaggerated.

Overall, you will probably pay MORE in overall utility bills by using the Edenpure heater (or the 'amish' heater or any other electric heater). In the case where you might save a little by zone heating one room, remember all electric heaters produce the same heat for the cost, even those heaters not endorsed by Bob Vila.

After reading the ripoff report I was compelled to include the following information taken directly from the Edenpure website. The ripoff report stated it was suspicious they don't include wattage or btu information - but it is on their website for anyone who takes the time and cares to report accurate info. A family member has purchased one of these heaters and just loves it. He is in his late 70's, has always worked as a mechanical manager of large plants, and has many, many type of home heaters in the past but felt like this was everything promised and more. The company doesn't state they are the cheapest heater out there .... only that they do a great job of heating your home and keeping it warm and comfortable without sending you to the poor house each month when the electric bill arrives. They said their heat pump doesn't come on and they haven't had to fire up the wood stove which normally they do and it is still drafty.... but with the Edenpure the floor and corners of the rooms are just as toasty as the area directly at the heater. Not to mention the fact that the air is not all dried out and they don't have to worry about the grandkids and cat touching it.

The specs from the website are listed below - note the amps, wattage and btu's are listed. Also copied from the website is other information in answer to the ripoff's report. Please note that there are also no filters to replace - it has a washable lifetime filter and if needed you can replace the heating mechanism.

Q. What is the origin of this amazing heating element in the EdenPURE Heater?

A. This advanced heating element was discovered accidentally by a man named John Jones. He had a large old farmhouse that was impossible to heat. Jones had a coal furnace in his basement. Jones placed a sheet of cured copper near the furnace to store it. Cured copper is a type of copper that goes through an extensive heating process to give it special properties.

After the fire went out in the coal furnace, Jones noticed that the sheet of copper was heating his entire basement evenly, even though the furnace was no longer putting out heat. He also was amazed as to how long the heat stayed in the copper and continued to warm the room.

Jones was so taken back by this that he started to experiment. He formed a company to develop a heating source out of this cured copper. But Jones had a number of children and he did not want a heating source that would cause a fire or create other hazardous situations like creating carbon monoxide or radiation. He also did not want his children to get burned. To make a long story short, through a great deal of research and development, Jones developed a heating source that utilized commercial infrared quartz tubes.

Q. What advantages does infrared quartz tube heating source have over other heating source products?

A. John Jones designed his heating source around the three most important consumer benefits: economy, comfort, and safety. The final development of this infrared quartz heat source cannot be matched by any other heating system in the world. In the EdenPURE system, electricity is used to generate infrared light which, in turn, creates a very safe heat. Infrared is the safest form of heat because it does not create carbon monoxide or harmful radiation.
And, most importantly, infrared heat does not reach a burning temperature. After a great deal of research and development, very efficient infrared heat chambers were developed that utilize three unique patented solid copper heat exchangers in one EdenPURE Heater. Over 5 years of research, development and real life field testing stand behind this heat source. It has now worked in residential and commercial applications worldwide for over 25 years.

Q. Why is it that this quartz infrared heating source uses less energy to create heat than other sources?

A. Actually, there is more than one reason. One of the primary reasons is that heat at combustion level, which is what all other heat sources use, causes the heat to instantly rise to the ceiling. Therefore, the heat is not evenly distributed, causing a very inefficient and uncomfortable heat source.

The EdenPURE Quartz Infrared Portable Heater does not use burning heat. Once the heat exchanger absorbs the infrared heat, it exhales the heat into the living area which is carried by the existing humidity in the air. This causes the heat to travel rapidly and evenly throughout a room. In actual studies, photos using infrared lighting demonstrated that the heat was almost perfectly even from floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall. The EdenPURE Quartz Infrared efficiency is based on the distribution of energized air, not on just fan movement. This heat is coined as "soft heat" due to how comfortable it is.

Q. What are the other disadvantages of combustion heat sources?

A. Heat sources that are above the burning level have many unhealthy side effects. One of these is that it creates dry, irritating indoor air. It also burns a great deal of oxygen in the air. If you remember, when you sit in front of a fireplace or a portable heater or close to a heat source, you will remember yawning. This is because you are not getting enough oxygen.

This dry irritating heat and lack of oxygen dries out sinuses and mucus in the throat, and makes people susceptible to disease. The lack of oxygen causes fatigue. Also, many combustible heat sources produce carbon monoxide, static cling, and some produce radiation.

Q. I also understand that the EdenPURE produces clean fresh air without furnace filters. How can it do that?

A. A furnace generates a lot of dust due to the combustion. By lowering the furnace temperature, you are using your furnace less and therefore reducing the requirement for the furnace filters. Also, when there's no combustion, there are no harmful fumes.

Q. What is the life expectancy for the Quartz Elements?

A. Average element life is 20,000+ hours or approximately 10 years. The Quartz Elements are replaceable by an authorized service dealer.
