You can't just do medical billing off the street

Medical billing is very specialized and requires extensive knowledge of CPT, ICD-9 coding, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, HMO, IPA, etc.
Most physicians or facilities that do not have in-house billing use outside companies with highly trained medical billing/coding specialists. Why is such training required? Because if an inexperienced coder uses the wrong CPT/ICD-9 codes, the doctor will not get paid, the charges will be disallowed and they cannot rebill in most instances, not to mention legal sanctions.

If you are interested in getting into the field, there are many reputable courses available in community colleges or specialized vocational schools.
