Ellen Kay's Salon is located in Indiana, Pa.  I had the misfortune of meeting the two owners,  Josie Maimone and Deb Cooper when I picked their salon randomly from their sign on the road.  From the moment I walked in I had a bad 'gut' feeling about the place.  There was dirt and clutter everywhere and the tension in the air could have been cut with a knife.  I sat down and waited my turn without so much as a 'hello'.  After 45 minutes I politely asked if they knew when I'd be taken and the rude woman who spoke with me (I later found out was the one owner, Deb Cooper) said, "You'll be taken in the order you came in"!.  Nice customer service.

When I finally got my turn nearly an hour after arriving I told the sylist (who I later found out was the other owner,  Josie Maimone) that I wanted my hair chemically straightened.  She began applying the chemical straightener without so much as a WORD of explanation of what would happen, what was involved - NOTHING - even though I explained, "I have NEVER had this done before".  My hair is naturally kinky-curly and has been colored/highlighted for 30 years.  One hour later she is blow-drying my hair after rinsing out the chemical straightener and I got my first glimpse of what was to become a NIGHTMARE.  My hair was BREAKING OFF!  The chemical straightener was so harsh that it literally broke my hair off half way down the length of it.  I couldn't believe it!  I said, "WHY is my hair breaking like that??!" I was horrified.  She said, "Well your hair was damaged to begin with; you never should have gotten it straightened".  She could not even pull a wide-toothed comb thru the back as it had matted together in a giant wad of crunchy, coarse horse-hair feeling mess.

Before I left I asked what SHE was going to do to repair it.  Josie replied, "WE won't be doing anything.  You will need to get it cut and conditioned for an extra fee".  I nearly flipped out on her.  I said, "I want my money back!  You RUINED my hair!".  She just laughed and said, "I gave you exactly what you wanted and you are NOT getting any refund".

Needless to say I never went back to that horror house of hair.  I took them to the District Magistrate to get my money back PLUS damages.  Then I told every friend and family member I knew to warn everyone about them.  Someone told me they are lesbians and because of being socially outcast they have an 'attitude problem'.  I don't know if that's true or not but I do know I still have not gotten my hair back to normal.

I know this place....very well infact.  I get my hair cut here all the time.  Thing is, I have never been treated rudely and they have always been professional.  Thing is, I never pay until after they cut my hair.  I dont believe that they first charged you, and then worked on your head.  Just doesnt seem likely.  And if they are lesbians, I would be surprised, though that wouldnt bother me in the least.
