My girlfriend recieved notice from the sheriffs dept. stating that her wages would be garnished to satisfy an outstanding debt. When we investigated, it turned out to be a credit card that had gone in to default years before. she had come to terms with the collection agency and made all payments to satisfy the obligation. Now, more than two years later they are claiming that she defaulted and owes additional money. When we contacted the company they agreed that she had paid off the debt but had done it in 3 payments instead of two payments. their reasoning was that even though she paid, she did not when she pay according to the agreement so she defaulted. the company stated it lost their copy of the agreement and the employee who made the agreement was fired. so basically it is our word against theirs. so long story short, we paid an additional $1,600 to avoid wages being garnished. while i was withdrawing the money from my account to pay this, the teller told me that E,E,& C had just frozen another customers bank account. she advised me to pay the money even though it seems unfair to avoid having any further problems. i agreed considering we both have excellent credit and want to keep it.
