I received a phone call from a lady from Encore Financial Resources. She said that I had been approved for a credit card. I asked numerous questions, and everything seemed to be legitimate. I told her that I would think about the offer, and hung up. She called me a minimum of 4 times after this.

I finally agreed to the "terms". The lady gave me a password to the website, after giving her my bank account information. I was not able to log-on to the website for 2 days. When I finally logged on, I noticed that I had to pay a fee for whatever credit card I wanted, in addition to the $169.95 fee that Encore charged. I had previously been told that there was not a fee for any of the cards on the website (obviously before they had my account info).

To make a long story short, after looking on the internet, I saw that many people had been scammed by this company. I stopped payment on my check. Nobody has contacted me since then to find out what the problem is.

I received a letter in the mail today from CyberCollect, Inc. They say that they are a debt collector for Encore. They say that I now owe $189.95 ($169.95 + $20.00 service charge). They said I have been placed in a bad check-writer's database. I am also at risk of having an adverse credit notice placed on my credit report, and if I do not pay them immediately, my "account" will be turned over to an attorney.

I am going to fight this, but I know they will probably win. I just hope that I can help keep someone else from falling into this "trap"!
