If you are interested in teaching English in China please avoid English to Perfection in Beijing. The owner is an extremely immoral person with no compunctions about lying, extortion, and general dishonesty. The owner uses lies, manipulation, and his vast immaturity and petty anger to take advantage of his employees. He speaks fluent Chinese and uses his knowledge of the culture and language to operate his business with no morals and no thought for his employees or clients.

There are countless examples of the owners dishonesty but please consider these instances before aligning yourself with this company:

  1. Withholding money for various "deposits" with no plan to return the money. Expect any money owed you at the close of your contract to be kept by Hurdy for one reason or another.
  2.  Inadequate housing. You will live anywhere he can get for free. Don't be surprised if you live IN the office. Dont expect consistent hot water, space for food, ability to do laundry, or privacy. 
  3. Constant poorly crafted lies to manipulate employees into working on scheduled days off
  4. Hours apon hours of useless meetings with no pay for the time. No respect for your time or intelligence
  5. Constant cutting passive aggressive comments meant to undermine your confidence and give him dominion over you. Emotional terrorism and abuse is common. Also, expect to feel physically threatened if you are a woman and make him angry. (Listen to just one conversation between the owner and his wife to get a glimpse of what you are in for. He treats her disgustingly poorly.)
  6. No health insurance as promised in the contract
  7. Thinly veiled lies about anything and everything. Imagine constant obvious lies at work and knowing that any lie you expose will be met with fury.
  8. Low ball salary
  9. No vacation time/sick time for the duration of your contract (between 3 months to 1 year)
  10. Abysmal scheduling resulting in (possibly) a new schedule every few hours. The employee is expected to conform to every change with little or no notice 
  11. Docking pay for the smallest and most unimportant reasons

 

Although several of these facts sound like a personal affront on Endre Hurdy, remember that you are likely a westerner in China for the first time and completely reliant on this amoral man for everything. He will take advantage of your lack of knowledge of the country, customs, and language. Be very careful if approached by this company. You will regret everything but the free plane ticket. Yale University would be ashamed it spawned such a dishonest graduate.

I fully expect either a shamefully angry rebuttal from the owner or his wife, or a well worded positive letter from a "current employee." Since every employee has been uncerimoniously run out of China by this tiny company please don't believe anything that is said. It's just the owner up to his lies again.
