They found some almost invisible scratches on a rear door when I returned the car.  It was impossible, given where I drove and parked the car, for them to have happened while I rented the car.  Then they had an estimate prepared for doing such unnecessary and unrelated things as removing and replacing the bumper, rear window glass, rear lights, etc. Finally the added a $100 administrative fee and $63 diminished value claim.

..We hear about this exact situation from time to time on this website and others regarding auto rentals. I have rented cars here in LA and notice they do not always do a very careful inspection when you take the vehicle out..but when you return it, they seem to notice damage and fine scratches and dings etc that were hard to notice if not specifically looking for it.

Unfortunately, once you sign the inspection you do make yourself liable for any damage they notice upon return of the vehicle not noted on their invoice.

So what I have learned to do..even though this pisses them off sometimes..is inspect the car myself before signing, and note to them all the damage I have found. I do this with the entire exterior top to bottom, interior, trunk and even take a peak under the hood. I take pictures with my cell phone cam as well of even the smallest imperfections.

That is really the only way to fully protect yourself from being blamed and liable for pre-existing damage. If we lived in a world where everyone was honest these extra precautionary steps would not be necessary..but nowadays we all need to be on the defense 24/7 with just about everything, or suffer the losses.
