Fred came to my door on February 18th and charmed his way into two magazine subscriptions from me, totalling about $105.00. I thought it would be fine; after all, my roommate had bought some magazines from someone similar (a girl, though) the previous week.

So I go to sign up, and he asks me to write a check for one and use my credit card for the other. Something about filling a quota for gift subscriptions, I guess; AND he used MY cell phone to call the credit card in!

It has now been nearly 4 months, and I have received nothing. I called and was told back and ask for a specific person tomorrow during a specific time. No "I'm sorry," or "I wish there was a way I could help but." It was just an irritated bit of what sounded to be begrudgingly given advice.

I am left to wonder if this is just some complex identity theft ring, in which an unlucky portion of us are simply duped and taken for a ride.

I'm going to check my credit reports. So should you.

I'm also going to put a "no solicitors unless you have Girl Scout cookies" sign on my door.

(My roommate received *his* magazines, by the way; maybe it was a different group?)
