Long story short. I subscribe to credit monitoring. I notice my credit score took a hit. I inquire why and they said that a company EOS CCA filed a report for a debt. I contact EOS CCA, they didn't have and record of the debt, couldn't give me any facts, but did acknowledge that they reported me only after they do a cross check with my telephone number and me telling them what company they were claiming I didn't pay. My first mistake that I gave them any information. They finally, said they can't find anything but my name is already on the file, so they can't correct my credit report, only National Grid/Keyspan could correct the file. Next I call Nat'l Grid and they can't find the file or the debit. I then made my second mistake as I gave them the address I had when I was a customer of theirs.

All of a sudden they found a debt, except for it was for a period that was a year after I was no longer living at the residence. I cancelled the utilities the day I moved out, but they never shut them off. Next tenant moves in, was nice enough to pay the bill all is good. Year later, new tenant moves in, loves the free utilities, doesn't pay the bill. I explain to the utility I moved cancelled and even showed them I had a new account with them, but they said you never cancelled and no one else took over the account so the bill is mine. Arguing went on, spoke to a supervisor, she said it happens all the time, but they no longer own the account EOS CCA does and there is nothing they can do at this point. I call EOS CCA again, and explain this isn't my debt and what transpired and that it has to get taken off my credit report.

The ladies reply was that "if you weren't home to turn off service, then you didn't turn it off". "You should have had the utilities shut off while you were still leaving there" I explained that is why you call and cancel utilities, but you are not going to live in a house in the middle of winter without heat so you can shut them off before moving out. Her reply was " you refused to meet the utilities at the house to shut they off". So now this rep that had no record of my debt is an expert on my case and Nat'l Grids policy. I once again asserted this isn't my debit, and they offered me a 50% off solution to settle my debt. When I stated that was extortion, since it isn't my debt, she hung-up on me. The problem is this is still on my credit report and will still be a black flag effecting my future borrowing power being caused by a company that purchased this "paper" for pennies on the dollar. There has to be a solution for others in my position.
