Expedia Expedia canceled my flight and giving me hard time to refund $2900 i paid to purchase the air ticket Internet

I baught my tickets for international travel through expedia.com on Oct-17. I receive a call from expedia on Nov.7 that one of my flights have been canceled. The cost of tickets is $1450 each.

I called them to see what was the problem. The representative offered me alternative flight (to replace the one which was canceled) which would have one additional connection and it will delay my arrival for 6 hours, obviously it was not acceptable to me and i asked for refund of my tickets.

They kept me on phone for over an hour and kept telling me that they cannot contact airline that issued the ticket. I said that's not my problem, it's between the airline and you, you took my money and if you can't deliver what you promised, you need to return my money.

They said they can't do anything until they contact the airline. Any more delay means i would end up paying more money to buy new ticket, at the same time i can't buy the new ticket until i get the refund.

are they responsible to pay the difference that i would end up paying to buy new ticket?
