I heard a loud banging on the door at dinnertime. A young man (he was probably older than he looked) said he was only three people away from going on a trip to the Bahamas, if only I would help him out.

I asked him what I would have to buy. He showed me the magazine subscriptions and I told him I couldn't afford that. He said I could also donate a magazine to charity. I reiterated that I couldn't afford it.

He asked if I could even make a small donation of $5, which he would pool to send a magazine to charity. I said this is fine; in retrospect, I hope this money actually goes toward a magazine for charity. I wrote a check, and when I asked for a receipt, he said I couldn't get a receipt unless I purchased a whole subscription.

By this time, he already had the check. I would have asked for it back were it not for the other person who was waiting for him at the bottom of my steps with a large dog. It was intimidating and scary. He also at one point asked to be let inside my apartment to write something down, but I told him to use the table on my porch. This was also scary.

I feel so stupid for being taken in by this now. I had a hard time sleeping that night and it still bothers me very much. I have this uneasy feeling I can't get rid of.
