On December 24,2003, Federal Express allegedly mis-delivered my Sony VAIO Laptop computer to a wrong address in Philadelphia. The carrier left the computer on a public porch of a multiple unit dwelling four blocks from the correct addres. This is gross negligence on the part of the carrier but all they offered was a check for $100.

Obviously this amount is not sufficient to replace the computer. Their explanation is that this is all they offer under their guidelines and tariffs. These are tariffs that they do not offer or explain at the time of shipping.

The computer contained important documents as well as personal financial information. The fact that the documents are backed up does not prohibit someone in possession of the computer to use the personal data to their advantage. It could take months or years for me to discover some form of identity theft as a result of this action.

Additionally, my research indicates that no matter what amount of insurance a consumer takes out, Federal Express will determine what is owed to the consumer. In no case, is it the amount of insurance the consumer has paid for. This means the company is racking up millions of dollars in so-called "insurance" payments without ever paying out. There are countless stories of cnsumer ripoff of this kind by Fed Ex.

Caveat emptor.
