Fifth Third Bank Available Funds in Account not Honored by Bank Cincinnati, Ohio
Dear Readers,
Here are the facts;
Funds in account on 07/01/08 $604.13
On 07/02/08 a Check 630 for $550.00 was presented to the Bank System.
On 07/02/08: Which causes RETURN DEPOSIT ITEM(S) ADVICE:713329 $30.00 and RETURN DEPOSIT ITEM(S) FEE $10.00
On 07/02/08: Which leaves DAILY BALANCE **** $14.13
Speculation; This only leads me to believe that the Bank did not have the available funds in the coffers and the exact moment that check 630 was presented to the banking system, or Fifth Third Bank in there need to raise capital are generating instances where they can generate fees.
Partial Excerpt of Bank reply:
On behalf of the Bank, please accept my sincere apology for any inconvenience or concern this situation may have caused you.

That was a very classy post. It's always refreshing to see someone admit when they make a mistake (I've made more than my share.)
It would be a much better world if everyone would do it. Unfortunately it rarely happens and virtually never happens on this site.
If people would admit they make a mistake it would make the real ripoffs much more credible.
thanks, you're a good example.

New Information That Exonerates Fifth Third Bank

Well I hate to be wrong, but in this case. I will be due to new information I have found out about. $30.00 was a Check cashed by my wife from a third party that was NSF. My apologies to the bank, for my self righteousness and not knowing the facts, that were unknown to me. Thanks Regards,
Robert

Update to Readers and Responders

Hello Responders,
There was a $600.00 Cash deposit made on 07/01/08. The $30.00 was part of the $40.00 in total fees levied by the bank. Which left $14.13 still in the account. The account was never below 0.00 (Zero).
Thanks for you Comments,
Robert

Usually the NSF fees hit the day after the actual item clears.
And "return deposit" sounds like what Nikki mentioned.

Did you make a deposit?

It sounds like you deposited a $30 check from someone and it bounced. It sounds like you are not being charged an overdraft fee on your account, you are being charged $10 because an item you deposited from someone else bounced and they had to return it. Banks have done that for years. That's why merchants charge you for a bounced check, because their banks charge them when you bounce a check to them.

I just got done reading Report: #351010, and if I had not had something all most exactly just happened to me. I my not have thought this would or could have happen in a financial system that prides themselves as being superior to the world in ethical behavior. This is something that I would expect to happen in a third world country or an emerging market. Now, what I am about to say is (just my opinion), however (I consider it to be true); This is theft!

Fifth Third Bank account left open

While I have not totally closed my Fifth Third Bank account. I have left it open with a penny balance (.01) on the outside and doubtful chance that the bank might make things right. This is the first time that I have had this problem and would like to continue banking there as they have a location convenient for me. However I am a person of principal and will find it hard to continue a relationship with this banking institution.
