Complaint Review: Fifth Third Bank

Fifth Third Bank Fifth Third Bank added over two hundred dollars of overdraft fees because of their timing of a deposit. They were stern, unwilling to bend and left my checking account with twenty three dollars to live on for the next week. I have never asked for for a reversal of fees or any grace from this bank. They seemed content with their posting my debits over my deposit to get the overdraft charges. Cincinnait Ohio

I have had an experience with Fifth Third Bank that has left me with twenty three dollars in my checking for living expenses for the next week.

I had several checks written in my account and had a balance to cover them. On Monday, April 7, by accident used my 5/3 debit card instead of my Visa to pay for a purchase. That purchase had taken out over a hundred dollars of my account that I did not realize. I realized this this mistake later in the day near eight PM. I withdraw cash from another account and ran to the local grocery store that had a 5/3 bank. I arrived just short of eight and the counter clerk told me they were closed. I explained the situation and that I needed to deposit the cash into my account. The clerk told me to put the deposit in the ATM machine just around the corner. I did that and I received a reciept stating that my account balance had included my deposit.

The next day I checked on line to make sure that the deposit went through, and there it was. I now had my deposit receipt and my computer print out with a balance that was posiitve and encluded my cash deposit on April 7.

By Wed, April 9. I checked my account again on line. To my surprise, I was over a hundred dollars withdrawn. To this day I do not understand how they came up with that balance.

I rushed into 5/3 bank and talked to the local manager. She was not one bit simpathetic and didn't even acknowledge my deposit reciepts. All she had to say was that she would take down my situation and present it to the board and would be notified in two days about what they decided to do. I couldn't believe what she was saying but that is all she had to offer me. So I gave her explaination and she wrote it down and said she would present it to the committee.

I got a call from her on Thurs, April 10 telling me that the committee had decided to reverse one overdraft charge of 33. In the meantime while the committee was deciding what to do with my account, they tagged on more overdraft charges. The total overdraft now is close to 300.00. The sad thing is if they would have posted my deposit in a timely fashion, I would have had no overdraft charges and my account would be close to three hundred dollars for me to use to live on for the next week.

I think the thing that got to me the most was their lack of caring and stern reaction. I am a 58 year ol widow and I have never in my life experiences have had any bank or anyone to that matter treat me so unkind and willingsness to try to help. I am closing my account with them and never will put through a transaction with them again.

I pointed out to them that once I used their ATM machine for a withdrawal. The machine took the amount off of my balance but never released any money. I went inside the bank and told them. They knew that the machine was broken but put no sign on it. This is was a Monday and they responded that I would have to put a disput in and if their machine balanced on Thurs. they would put the money back in my account. They held on to my money for four days without it being in my account. Once again they were not caring and more or less said this is the way it is. Isn't it ironic that they can do anything with our money if they make a mistake but just let us make a mistake with theirs, we pay dearly.
