I have had a Club 53 checking account for twelve years. This account by definition provides free checks when reordering. When I reordered last month [April 2007] my account was debited $14.95. I had to go back into a nearby branch to vehemently complain before the charge was removed. The customer service representative finally agreed with me the charge was incorrect. He didn't understand why I was debited.

Everyone who has business with Fifth Third must review what the bank does and question fees. They will try to charge for the air you breathe and take advantage of trusting clients. Beware, Fifth Third will intentionally charge unreasonable fees in hopes they aren't discovered.

I'm puzzled as to why you think this is a rip off.

I absolutely agree with you that it's important that people review their account statements for unauthorized transactions or fees. But I'm puzzled as to why you immediately jump to "rip off" instead of possibly being an honest mistake. The fee happened when you ordered checks. I'm betting that when you order the checks that the agent has to override the normal charge procedures. The agent may have forgotten to override the fee, but this doesn't mean that the bank as a rule tries to slide these fees past customers. It sounds like you didn't suffer any harm (other than the time it took to make your case to a bank rep) and you were made whole, so I really don't see how this is a rip off.
