Purchased home warranty because house we purchased was 30 yrs old. Air conditioner started blowing hot air. Called first american, whom our home warranty was bought from.

They told us all we needed to pay was $45.00 deductible which we paid them directly. They took 5 days to send repairman to our home. He informed us that it would cost $185.00 plus a service call charge that must be paid to him before he fixed air conditioner.

When we refused to pay him this money, he left. We called first american and after hours of being transferred and holding, they told us our claim was denied because our air conditioner was dirty. Not the filter, the unit!

The air conditioner was in the same condition as when first american wrote the warranty not quite a year ago and it being dirty was no problem then.

We had already renewed our warranty and paid a $40 monthly renewal fee plus the $45.00 deductible for the service call. All which they said was non-refundable!

They will not pay for any claims for anything. Since when is it the owners responsibility to go outside and take your a/c unit apart and clean it. Everyone knows the only maintenence required by the owner is to keep a clean filter in a/c/

This company is a rip off. Buyer beware. Do not buy because they will take your money and never pay for a claim!

Contact your realtor....

Contact the realtor that handled this purchase for you...we had to do the same. Our warranty company, a different one, was stalling on fixing our own AC...very much the same story. I ended up calling our realtor, and she connected me with her contact at the warranty company...boy did things happen then! They rely on the realtors to help sell their warranty product....remember that.

If that doesn't work...submit complaints to the Board of Realtors, the BBB, and anyone else you can think of. It does help. Good luck!
