Yesterday a man supposedly named Adrian called my daughter's brother in law (a person I have only seen twice, about 5 years ago, currently living in Virginia) and left an answering machine message that I needed to call him (Adrian) right away.

This morning my estranged mother (in Ohio) called my sister, hysterical, telling her this Adrian had called her and told her I was in jail (I wasn't) in Illinois. I have not talked to my mother for over 10 years and she has changed her name from her married name/my maiden name during that time. How Adrian made these connections is unclear, but I cannot believe he has used legal means to do so. However the real issue is the lie about me being in jail.

In addition to those two calls, Adrian also called my son (also with a different last name than mine) at his office this morning. He used my son's last name, saying that I had personally given it to him (which I had not). When my son pressed Adrian about how he knew his name he hung up on him.

I happened to visit so my son called Adrian back and handed me the phone. Adrian identified himself and when I asked him why he was calling he kept saying "Hello? Hello? Hello? as if he couldn't hear me. Then he hung up. My son called back and the manager answered the phone at Adrian's extension. She refused to tell me why she was calling and then hung up on me.

This company is listed on the internet as a debt collection service and that is what what he told to my daughter's brother in law but Adrian nor his manager would verify that. As of now, I have no idea what they are really calling me for.

Because of this website and Bud Hibbs' site and Steve's comments, I have a clear plan on how to handle these people - along with how to handle any other bill collectors that come might come out of the woodwork! Thanks for all the help! Its great not being a victim of these creeps!

Elsie...File FTC complaints AND send a CEASE COMMUNICATIONS request.

Elsie,

They violated the law several times. Go to the FTC website and file a separate complaint on each one as it is the number of complaints that brings FTC action.

Read and print out the FDCPA, as it is fairly short and to the point.

NEVER speak to any collector. NEVER..

As per your rights under the FDCPA, you have the right to request a CEASE COMMUNICATIONS with any third party collector/debt buyer.

Send this by certified mail, return reciept requested. Be sure to put the certified# on the letter itself, and keep a copy for your records.

This agency must be new, and/or very small, as they are not yet listed on BudHibbs.com. This is a very informative site on credit and collections issues.

Good luck.
