FAQ: What to do when a collection agency contacts you for a debt that you don't recognize:
There is a federal law governing collection agencies. It's called the Fair Debt Collection Act. You have important rights under this act.
You have the right to request validation for ANY alleged debt that a collection agency is trying to collect from you. Per the Fair Debt Collection Act, they MUST make an effort to validate the alleged debt and stop all collection activity (like calling you) until they have validated the debt.
Simply send a letter sent via Registered Mail with Return Receipt to this firm with the following statement:
I do not recognize this alleged debt. Per the Fair Debt Collection Act I am officially requesting validation of this alleged debt.
Understand the following:
* Don't let a bill collector bully/scare you into making a payment
* Bill collectors cannot take your firstborn child
* Bill collectors cannot have you arrested for not making a payment by sundown
* If you make any payment on this alleged debt, you will validate it as legitimate, so DON'T make any payments
