100 % ripoff had my bank put into empty account to check it out although we know its a ripp off , just to see what it will do. I really dont understand how it is illegal for americans to write bad checks but foriegn countries can send them to us to ripp us off. You would think our own goverment would do something about it or the banks , Washington mutual is a very well known bank that the check was print on and know one seems to want to proscute these people.

Some do get caught

#3Consumer Suggestion

Just today, Montreal police busted a telemarketing fraud ring -- targetting mostly seniors in the US. Google "Montreal police bust telemarketing fraud" for the story. At least one version mentioned that 7 Western Union stores were closed as part of the operation.

This operation, and others, naturally requires cooperation between the police forces of both countries.

A couple of weeks ago, a Vancouver "man" was arrested after an investigation by the joint task forces of the RCMP (Project Caveat) and the FBI in Los Angeles. The news release is still on their site -- Sundip Dhanda is the name to search for to get that story.

So what to do? File with FTC.gov, local police, i3c.gov. If you have information about a Canadian phone number pass it along to Phonebusters and/or the RCMP in Canada. Sometimes they do get catch these people.

But the best way to shut these guys down is to tell everyone you know never to use a money wire. There is NO reason ever to need to transfer money that way. The banking network is faster, more secure, and traceable. A money wire is the same as sending cash through the mail with big writing on the envelope saying "Contains Cash"..

Plenty of people WANT to prosecute them!

Wallace wonders why no one seems to want to prosecute these scammers. Well, plenty of people sure do!

The hard part is even when scammers ARE operating in the U.S., it can be really hard to catch them. They know they are scamming, so they stick around an address a few weeks, months, whatever, then vanish. They reappear 1000s of miles away, and start all over again.

When the fraud is coming from OUTSIDE of the U.S. - I can't even imagine how many thousands of government employees it would take to track down all these scammers. And even if they were able to, would the scammers be subject to U.S. laws?

I don't know the answers to these questions, but I do know good scammers are usually one step ahead of the law, if not a mile ahead.

All we can do is NOT TRUST ANYBODY when it comes to giving your money to someone. Yes, we have to trust to a great extent, but reading contracts, not providing access to your bank account, looking up companies on the internet BEFORE doing business with them, and NEVER, EVER sending cash via Western Union or MoneyGram, etc., to people YOU DO NOT KNOW - these are a few things we CAN do.
