Very similar to another report on Rip-off, I had signed up for what was described as a month-to-month membership in September 2004 for Fitness USA in Daly City, CA knowing that I would be in the area temporarily. Because I was relocating I wanted to cancel in January. At that point, I informed Fitness USA and they said that I had actually joined their gym for a two-year contract. I was informed to fill out a form I was given explaining my reason for cancellation and indicating my new address.

Further instructions included to mail it from my new location with the city's postmark and that would be sufficient. I had followed up about two weeks later to check the status and they said they received it, are reviewing it and will contact me via mail with the status. I never received anything in the mail, but did receive a notice from National Credit stating that my Fitness USA payment was past due. I made numerous phone calls trying to get a hold of a person who would provide me with correct information to process my cancellation. I would either get forwarded to a recording or speak to a rude receptionist who doesn't provide any employee full names including their own. Finally, I got through to somebody telling me what I needed. I provided one other form of documentation, which ended up being insufficient as well because the person I spoke to didn't tell me additional information that was required. In that time, I've also received another second past due notice from National Credit Corporation.

Now it's April and I have not received any written correspondence from Fitness USA stating any information on my status for cancellation even since January, which they claimed they would provide. Since then, I finally sent in a requested third documentation and will follow-up because I surely cannot depend on Fitness USA to get back to me as stated or get any call backs from any of the messages that I left.

Bottom line is, they have an insufficient ship run, providing wrong information or giving the run around, and expecting you to pay the price when they will not communicate efficiently with you. Their employees are unprofessional and clearly don't have the proper training on how to speak to customers or assist you in speaking to the appropriate person.
