Footprints in the Sand Author Footprints Poem Historical Facts
WHO PUBLISHED THE WORLD FAMOUS FOOTPRINTS POEM you will find the historical link of Robert Louis Scharring-Hausen Founding Father of Library Week.

This record shows that despite of all the claims made by Basil Zangare that Mary Stevenson had no knowledge of copyrights that she in fact was already copyrighted eleven times before trying to established herself as copyright owner of the well known and beloved world famous Footprints poem published by Anonymous. Although this poem was similar it is doubtful that the public has been told the truth on this matter.

These historical facts have been presented to the public to present clarification on the original origin of the Footprints poem.

Basil Zangare claims the popular Footprints in the Sand has been seen in print by many around the world since the late 1940's. Not True!

At any time no author has been credited with this immortal work, except for 'Author Anonymous' as appearing at the bottom. This Is A Fact!

The Footprints in the Sand web site created by Basil Zangare to bring to light the story behind 'Footprints in the Sand' and it's claimed author Mary Stevenson (Zangare). Not True!

The story as presented by Basil Zangare is merely to try to give credit to his unruly mothers attempt to take credit for someone else's work.

Mary wrote 'Footprints' in 1936 when she was very young and knew nothing of copyrighting. Not True!

Ella H Scharring-Hausen wrote Mary Stevenson's claimed version in 1922. Ella Scharring-Hausen was an educator in Princeton, New Jersey and taught children in the New Jersey and Pennsylvania area in the early 1930's where Mary attended school.

For many years handwritten copies were distributed by Ella. Ella's husband Robert Louis Scharring-Hausen was a nature columnist who wrote for the Sunday Times in Trenton, New Jersey. Mary Stevenson only believed she wrote it to comfort her own sad life.

To those who were in need of something to give, the Scharring-Hausens often shared their work to comfort others for all the joy they shared in their lives and to unselfishly raise proceeds for worthwhile foundations. Some of these foundations still currently exist today. This is a Fact!

It was sometime later that Mary saw it in print and wondered why no credit was given except for the word Anonymous.

An attorney told Mary Stevenson Zangare that it would be very hard to prove her as the author since it had been published by many including religious materials and greeting cards. Discouraged, Mary Stevenson Zangare didn't pursue it any further until 1994. The fact is this version was already copyrighted by the noble nature columnist. Most of the Scharring-Hausens records of writings remain in archives.

In 1984 while shortly before Mrs. Scharring-Hausens illness which preceded her death Mary Stevenson Zangare then made her public attempt to gain credit for it's authorship. Claiming while cleaning out the garage to prepare to move from her house, in a small suitcase, among other items the poem claimed to be discovered, a very old handwritten copy, that she thought she authored. It was one of the copies of the text that Ella wrote then later dated 1939.

Later the next year the U.S. copyright office awarded the author and heir of the copyright for Footprints also known as 'Footprints in the Sand' rendition of separate version 23 years after it was written. One night a man had a dream (version) made publishing phenomena with no credit given to Mary Stevenson Zangare for the rendition because Mary Stevenson did not author it. Gail Giorgio published this authors text without permission for use or payment to the rightful owner.

According to copyright law of 1909 Mary Stevenson or any other Author for that fact would have had to secure the work within the 28 year time period, otherwise the work is then identified and declared public domain or "fair use" clause which applies to copyright law. A party cannot claim authorship when the copyright is already secured, this is known as copyright infringement.

It was another 11 years before the handwritten copy was tested for authentication meanwhile Ella Scharring-Hausen had past away. Ella knew Mary Stevenson (Zangare) & Margaret Fishback-Powers as many others have claimed authorship of similar versions, none showing proof of the exact text as the beloved and world renowned version of Footprints One night a man had a dream text.. Although Ella's text was appreciated by many, the popular version of Footprints was not written until 1963 by her great grand niece and published by her husband Robert Louis Scharring-Hausen the Founding Father of Library Week 1922.

For all the claims made by author Gail Giorgio in the Footprints in the Sand life story of Mary Stevenson several facts surrounding the claim of authorship are being disputed. Mary Stevenson (Zangare), Gail Giorgio and Basil Zangare claim that Mary knew nothing about copyrighting before producing her book in 1994.

For the records that are on file in the U.S. Copyright Office it appears this is not a fact at all. After reviewing the records on file it is duly noted that Mary Stevenson in fact applied several times for copyright of her unpublished text for many titles other than Footprints. I found the dates of application to be of significant importance in establishing her claim to authorship of Footprints by Anonymous.

Eleven Copyright Records were found pre Mary Stevensons Zangare, Gail Giorgio, Kathy Bee Hampton & Wowzone stories. The dates of all copyrighted material are as follows which are verifiable through copyright search at the U.S. Copyright Office

January 13 1980, May 16 1980, November 17 1980, January 22 1981, March 15 1982, January 3 1983, March 28 1983, March 28 1983, July 9 1984, August 7 1984, September 17 1984.

This record shows that despite of all the claims made that Mary Stevenson had no knowledge of copyrights that she in fact was already copyrighted eleven times before trying to established herself as copyright owner of the well known and beloved world famous Footprints poem published by Anonymous. Although this poem was similar it is doubtful that the public has been told the truth on this matter.

Special Note: Danny Hahlbohm who produced artwork for the Footprints Posters claims he met Mary Stevenson in 1979 when she informed him she was the author of the Anonymous version of Footprints in the Sand. Although Danny is an artist the stories do not mesh. Kathy Bee Hampton claims she met Mary Stevenson at the famous Palomino night club in 1979 discovering Mary Stevensons so called claimed version of poem yet she did not encourage her to copyright it until 1984 five years after she met her and one year before the author of that version died.

Kathy Bee Hampton then encouraged Mary Stevenson in 1994 to change the non popular version of Footprints to the popular version. Mary should have told Kathy Bee that she was already copyrighted since Danny Hahbohm had already been producing the Footprints posters. In the Wowzone stories Mary Stevenson also claimed that she was a descendant of Robert Louis Stevenson the famous author and poet. The fact is Robert Louis Stevenson did not have any children and he died at a young age. Robert Louis Stevenson was born in 1850 and died in 1894. Mary Stevenson was not born until 1922.

Please note that Mr. Sharring-Hausen worked for the Trenton Times and you will see his dedicated publishings listed for several years.

Robert Louis Scharring-Hausen better known as "Scharry" worked for the Trenton Times. He was a Nature Columnist, a Rutgers University Graduate. He was also the Founding Father of Library Week, writer, editor and publisher.

Margaret Fishback Powers and Mary Stevenson (Zangare) never offered any information of Who published their so called claimed version of Footprints. They don't have an explanation for it because all they did was seek to take credit for someone else's work.

According to Copyright Law of 1909, which reflect the laws of these text, these items should have been denied copyright and declared public domain. Why has the U.S. Copyright Office even allowed registration for these two individuals named Mary Stevenson Zangare & Floyd Keeton? TXu-179-585 Title: Footprints in the sand / Mary T. Zangare. Description: 1 p. Claimant: Mary T. Zangare Created: 1939 Registered: 10Dec84 Special Codes: 1/B/D//A TXu-777-673 Title: Footprints in the sand. Description: 1 p. Note: Poem. Claimant: Floyd C. Keeton , 1921- Created: 1944 Registered: 13Jan97 Special Codes: 1/B 2. Registration Number: TXu-1-027-131 Title: Floyd C. Keeton's poetry anthology I am disputing the claim to copyright for this these two individuals for their claimed version of text.

I am requesting verifying documentation from the US Copyright Office that these copyrights are not legitimate. Your immediate attention is requested on this matter. Text claimed by Mary Stevenson Zangare was already public domain. The author of the actual text that Mary used was from Ella Scharring-Hausen written in 1922.

According to US Copyright Ella's text became public domain, How can you allow Mary Zangare copyright to something that is already public domain? Keeton's claim also reflects that his text no matter what version was lost to public domain according to the copyright law of 1944, which was US Copyright Laws governed by 1909 as well. I demand a response. Also there is a database error reflected in my copyrights that needs to be addressed; TXu-234-383 (COHM) Title: Footprints. Description: 8 p. Claimant: Carolyn Joyce Carty Created: 1963 Registered: 24Feb86 Title on Application: Footprints in the sand. Author on Application: Carolyn Joyce Carty (author of anon. contribution) Special Codes: 1/B///A The issue is the word (POEM) is not reflected on my copyrights.

I submitted 1 page poem and 7 page text which included brief biographical and historical entries for Footprints. My authorship of Anonymous is also not properly listed. When searching database under the term Anonymous (only) my copyrights do not show for my work. These two issues that have been misleading to persons and companies interested in using my text by being unable to locate my copyrights to pay use for it's royalties in any manner. I have respectfully earned 1 trillion dollars in royalties since 1963 and have only been paid less than $100.00 dollars because of these errors. Please correct these errors or be liable for my loss. A comment about Carolyn Carty's credibility

Please understand that Carolyn lays claim to any unsigned work claiming she is "Author Anonymous".  She has also claimed authorship to "In My Life" (In My Life I Loved You More; her title) by the Beatles.  This means she was 6 years old when she wrote it and 5 when she wrote "Footprints".

I have read the work by Ella H Scharring-Hausen tha Carolyn references as the original inspiration of "Footprints" and found that even though it uses the word "footprints" or "footsteps" in the text the content does not resemble Mary's "Footprints".

Carolyn Carty lost in court over this

#5Consumer Suggestion

Fri, June 04, 2010

In a case filed in 2007 in the USDC/EDNY Carolyn Carty lost a judgment in this matter for damages, that she did "NOT" write the poem, and that she was forbidden to further claim that she did.

I think that sums up the validity of this comment.

Hi Bob,

I am certain there were copies made by any various places such as Princeton Press, Hopewell Library, Rutgers Archives, etc. Scharry was a nature columnist for the Trenton Times he would not have overlooked something so important. That particular version is however public domain according to US Copyright of 1909, authored in 1922 any work published or non published falls into public domain pre 1923. Ella's brother Edgar
had copies that he distributed to individuals
throughout the US on many of his travels. Edgar if living would be 105 years old.

I noticed on their web site that their forensics person can only tell who wrote a copy of the poem and no where does it say that Mary was indeed the original author.

I would like to know if there are any printed copies that were printed prior to 1939.
