Fred Meyer is big on displaying signs (like at their customer service counter) that promise to return your money or allow an exchange within 6 months if you aren't happy with something for some reason.

I read this sign as I waited in line at the Customer Service counter, wanting to buy a bus pass. When I got to the counter, I bought the wrong bus pass for what I needed -- and I returned 5 days later with my receipt to exchange it for the correct one.

The Customer Service person and manager told me they would not exchange or take back the pass because "too much time had passed".

No where was I told there was any difference between this and anything else Fred Meyer sells. They certainly pass on such information some times -- like when you buy software, for example. Again, I got nothing, and I assumed they would honor what they said they would honor.

Wrong. So now I'm having to buy extra "upgrade" tickets to get to work each day, until I can buy the next month's bus pass that's actually correct.

And I will NEVER buy another thing from Fred Meyer. Everyone always says they are snakey on things. I guess I learned the hard way it's true.

I work at a FM in the Portland area. I feel bad that the customer service associate or manager did not explain to you the reason behind refusing the return.

Things like Ticketmaster tickets, buss passes, fishing licences are sold by FM ,but we don't own these entities. We are bound by their policies, because we don't actually own the products, but we are acting as an agent to sell them to you as a convenience so you can buy these things when you purchase your groceries. When we refuse a return on these items we are following the policies set for us by that company. If we break thier policies they will no longer allow us to offer these conveniences to you.

I hope that you will understand what I am saying and possibly give FM another chance. I have worked for them for 15 years and have always been treated fairly, and the benefits and pay far exceed what is offered by similar retailers such as Wallmart and Target. They are not perfect and do make mistakes sometimes, but in my experience we try to resolve it to the customers satisfaction if we can.
