In March of 2004, my fiance and I purchased a wedding ring set. We opened an account with Friedman's Jewelers. We were charged for the rings, warranty and an appraisal of the engagement ring. We were told we should receive the appraisal in two weeks by mail. After a month no appraisal, but I received my monthly bill just fine. I called repeatedly to check on the appraisal and I traveled 300 miles once a month for 9 months checking with the store in search of my appraisal.

After 12 months of pursuing the issue, management changed and no one ever found the appraisal. Then I made the mistake to go to a different Friedman's Jewelers. The store clerk charged me with another appraisal fee on a men's watch. One and a half years later, I stilll don't have an appraisal. This incident makes me question the authenticity of my jewelery. I've learned my lesson. I will never purchase jewelry from the Friedman's franchise again.

Pre market appraisal is what you paid for

#7UPDATE EX-employee responds

I used to work for Friedman's when the company started selling these appraisals. They are called PMA's-pre market appraisals. They are a general appraisal and are not of the individual item but are like stock photos that have the item number, a photo and the retail price as the appraisal, along with your name and address for insurance purposes, so it is very easy to reorder.

The reason you probably have not gotten yours is that the employee has to fill out a form and fax it to the company, and we used to have to keep the original form in a book.

All they have to do is fill a new form out with the item number, your name, and address and fax it in. All that info is on your account screen, but I would go to the store in person and watch them do it. If you made purchases during a busy month chances are it never got faxed. Also, a lot of the appraisals, if not all of them, come directly to the store, and it is up to the store employees to call and let you know it is there.

Be careful of all the extras that get added on to your account also. We were trained to add three types of insurance, the appraisal, and warranties, and not to say we were, just to figure it in and say it was included. Then you have to initial for the insurances, usually they weren't needed or explained, but there was a lot of issues with that because he employees are supposed to be licensed to sell it.

I hope I was able to help a little bit, just make sure you stay on top of it, and if you threaten to call the district manager, that might help as well!

Wait until you find out what your ring's really worth. Take it to an independant appraiser.

Third Party

I would like to recommend you have a third party such as a certified appraisor do the appraisal. When I bought my ring from Friedmans I was told it was platinum but when I had it appraised I was told it was actually white gold.
