On May23, 2008, I signed a contract with Gayla Nakamura to renovate my bathrooms. After 3 months of mishaps, she came to my home to collect her money. I told her that I was unhappy with the work and no longer trusted her. She just ignored me. I asked to see the receipts for the work done, and she gave me a spread sheet that she had made up. I ended up paying $22,973.44. Since then I have paid another contractor $3,200 to fix some of the problems. Gayla had sink hardware installed on the tub. I have an email in which she states that the tub hardware was replaced with the exact specifications that I had before. My contract stated that I was to receive tub hardware. The new contractor has replaced the sink hardware with tub hardware. The grout in the shower had to be replaced because it had cracked. The tile around the drain in the shower was jagged and had to be fixed. The marble counter tops had not been sealed and had to be sealed. The shower control had to be ajusted so I could get hot water. The glass shower door still needs some kind of adjustment. It doesn't close properly. I will have to get the man who refinished my tub to come back to fix the damage done to the tub when the hardware was replaced. Gayla hired unskilled workers to do my renovation. Even after paying the additional money, the job still loolk inferior. I am a widow and had no one with the right kind of knowledge to confer with about the work that was done. The only reason I paid Gayla the money was that I didn't want to damage my credit rating. I know that she took advantage of me. When Gayla worked for me, she was working with a company called Urban Decor. She now works Gardner Associates.

Rebuttal to Gayla

#4Author of original report

Thu, September 02, 2010

After I finished my business with Gayla, I was totally devastated. I was mad at myself for trusting her. I did go to a lawyer. I could have taken action against her, but it would have been too costly for me. I made a Ripoff Report partly to vent my anger and partly to warn other people.

In Gayla's rebuttal to my complaint, she stated that I contracted business with Urban Decor not her. The fact is that I got her phone number from a friend and contacted her directly. She did give me a business card with a phone number, but it was to her cell not Urban Decor's number. During my renovation, Gayla went out of town for several weeks. Some problems with the renovation came up, I wanted to contact someone. One of the contractors was able to give me her partner's number.

Gayla mentioned that I verbally abused the workers. This is totally untrue. I have been a teacher with the Northwest Independent School District for 22 years, and verbally abusing people is not my style.

Jerry Wilson was one of Gayla's contractors. He told me that he did not approve of the job she was doing for me and would never work for her again.

Gayla stated that Urban Decor provided the financial information. Before our final meeting, I told her that I wanted to see receipts. As I stated before she brought spread sheets that she made up. When we first met, Gayla said that she was able to get contractor's discounts. When I brought this up, she said that she never told me such a thing. Also at this meeting her partner, Diane Hussin, attended. After I gave Gayla my check, she gave it to Diane and made a big deal about no longer being a partner in Urban Decor.

As I stated earlier the only reason I paid Gayla is that I thought that by not paying her would hurt my credit rating, and I have a very good credit rating.

I really don't think that Gayla will do anything to resolve this situation. I've come to think of this as a bad experience that taught me not to be so trusting of people.

Do not do any work for this women

#4REBUTTAL Individual responds

Wed, September 01, 2010

This rebuttal is in response to a women that contracted the business I worked for - Urban Decor not myself.   I am only responding to this now because a family member brought it to my attention.

All of her allegations are untrue.  Bottom line was a meeting with myself and another associate of Urban Decor was held with her after a punch list was completed and she signed off and paid the final balance.   All the workers were licensed installers and she personally verbally abused some of the workers to the point they walked off the job and I had to replace with others.  She played the widow card from the beginning with us and we reduced fees and no mark-up on materials or labor at the signing of the initial contact.

I was independant contractor for Urban Decor and all financial information was provided by the company.

Please remove this off my name.  This should be a company complaint.

It is individuals like this that hurt the small businesses by taking advantage of not wanting to pay for their time and services.  In this case she willingly admitted by paying the final balance that our work was completed to her satisfaction per the contract that she signed with Urban Decor.

Also, the women's name is Cathy - she spelt her own name wrong.
