GE Money Capital Rep gave name as Robert Johnson with THICK Indian accent; another SCAM Nationwide
I had applied for loans online and received a call from a recording stating that I had been approved for a loan up to $5000 from GE Money Capital and to call back at (321) 422-2782. When I did, was routed to "Robert Johnson" at (315) 274-1665, with a very thick Indian accent. He advised me that if I would pay a $200 "good-faith security deposit", wired through their "partner" MoneyGram, then I would receive a $5000 loan deposited into my bank account to be paid back as withdrawals of $250 from my account for 22 months. He explained that the security deposit was to show good faith on my part as too many people have skipped out on loans. This sounded fishy to me, so I contacted the other company that called offering up to a $5000 loan, Cash America, and they had the same request, but higher payments. I thought it unlikely for both calls to be scams from 2 different "companies", so I wired the $200 and even held for a confirmation number from Mr. Johnson confirming receipt of my "security deposit". He then stated that $5000 would be deposited into my bank account.
The next day, when the loan amount wasn't in my account, Mr. Johnson claimed their bank blocked the wire and now wanted $500 more to purchase insurance on the loan in case I lost my job. Mr. Johnson told me that, since I was their good customer, I would only have to pay $250 more, then I would receive the $5000. I refused and called him out on the scam, where he became terribly offended and asked me to trust him. I told him that day I wanted to cancel my application and wanted my deposit back. He then stated it would take until the following Tuesday and that there was a $50 cancellation fee. I waited a week before calling back and asking about my deposit. Mr. Johnson first said I only paid $99. He next told me MoneyGram never sent them the money I wired, to which I called him out on his lie and reminded him that I got a confirmation from him that they received it. He got exasperated and said that I just wasn't getting my money back. I told him I was going to the Attorneys General of Florida, New York and Texas to report their scam if I didn't get my money back, as security deposits are fully refundable. He said he didn't care what I did and hung up. I called the main number and was told the same by a "Robin" or "Rueben Peterson" with an even thicker Indian accent. Do not buy a thing GE Money Capital has to say!
