Approximately three years ago I purchased a Compaq Presario 1920 notebook computer from Circuit City for $2600 and then purchased the $400 extended warranty from GE-Zurich through Circuit City.

Over the last few months the hinges on the screen have become weaker and weaker till now it will not even hold itself upright. As you can imagine this makes a portable computer pretty much useless. I contacted GE-Zurich and was immediately told this was not covered, I asked what was covered and the rep laughed and said that was a good question then proceded to give me a fax number for my complaints.

I was told I would be contactecd in 24 hours from the fax, I called back two days later and then it changed to 72 hours. I waited another day then demanded to speak to someone who could help me. GE-Zurich agreed to take a look at my computer. I then received a phone call saying it would not be covered and that then computer hinges had been intentionally broken back. This is not the case, they became loose over many months. I then was called a liar and out of luck. So they sent the notebook back to me, but it was in worse condition, caps covering the screws to the screen were missing on the front and the side covers of the screen were loose and keep coming off.

Let me tell you now why I purchased this warranty in the first place. They advertise, on their website and flyers in Circuit City..."Enhanced manufactuer warranty" "Covers all functional parts" "Complete System protection". The rebuttals I have read so far are just worthless, I have read my contract, nowhere does it state hinges are not covered, although this companies reps say it do. Under what is not covered it just says its in GE's sold discretion to determine this, and cosmetic things such as paint and scratches are not covered. Hinges are not cosmetic, they are a functional part of the computer! How would you like your $2600 laptop computer not to be able to keep itself open and upright after purchasing a $400 extended warranty? You will find out if this happens to you.
