Exeter man faces 76 charges in dog fighting, gambling operation

EXETER The man charged with running an illegal pit bull fighting ring behind his plush Exeter house was eyed by authorities in New Hampshire several years ago as a player in a dog-fighting ring that was under investigation in that state, a source familiar with the case said this week. The source said that when William Dean of 1 Tamarind Ln, learned the ring was being investigated, he moved out of the area and eventually ended up in the upscale Exeter neighborhood, where he was arrested Tuesday morning. Dean was arraigned in Exeter District Court on Wednesday morning, where he was charged with 37 counts of cruelty to animals, 37 counts of exhibition of fighting animals, criminal threatening and possession of narcotic drugs. Exeter District Court Judge Laurence Cullen set Dean bail at $125,000 cash and $125,000 personal recognizance.Dean's attorney Gerry Lapro said Dean was planning to post bail Wednesday afternoon. However, he still remained in jail Thursday afternoon.

Police believe they put a dent in a major illegal dog-fighting ring with the arrest and seizure of the dogs this week."I believe it was a high-level professional dog-fighting operation with this individual being the leader of the pack," Exeter Police Chief Richard Mansfield said. Police seized 37 dogs, including eight puppies, from a Quonset hut behind Dean house during a raid Tuesday morning. Police were shocked by the battle scars some of the dogs had, including one missing a tongue and another with two broken legs that never received veterinary attention. "I just took a walk through the Quonset hut," Mansfield said at the scene, adding the dogs were friendly and wagging their tails. "It breaks your heart to see these dogs because they're on death row."

Initially, they believed there were 50 dogs, but later determined there were fewer. They believe Dean ran a professional pit bull-fighting business out of a two-floor gray garage adjacent to a Quonset hut that housed the dogs. In the upstairs of the garage, police found a fighting arena, dog treadmill, a scale and steroids. The entire area, including the stairs up to the arena, was covered in blood. Police said the going rate for betting on a dog fight runs from $5,000 to $100,000.

While searching Dean's home, police found $300,000 in cash in his bedroom, banded together in $5,000 bundles, Mansfield said.Police in Exeter have received many calls already from people who want to adopt or help the dogs. At this time, they are working with animal experts in Massachusetts and New Hampshire to determine if the dogs will be able to be adopted out. Mansfield said the advice he had received so far from the animal welfare agencies is that the dogs will not be able to go into homes."At times, they will fight to the death; it's a barbaric sport," Mansfield said. "Once you train these dogs for fighting, you can't put them in with a family and that's the sad thing about it."

However, many members of pit bull rescue leagues across the country e-mailed Seacoast Newspapers on Wednesday with success stories of dogs that had been placed in homes following removal from homes where they were trained to fight. The only survivors may be eight puppies, who are less than a week old, and were found inside with their mother. But Mansfield said he has been advised by the animal rescue workers that the puppies are from a strong fighting bloodline and may not be able to be saved. Lapro said his client is innocent and questioned the merits of the police case against Dean. Lapro said there is no evidence that dog fights had actually been held on the property. "This is not unusual for an individual to house this many pit bulls," Lapro said. He insisted his client is not a danger to the community and would not flee from the area if he posts bail. He pointed out that Dean wife is a teacher in the Exeter Regional School District.

Mansfield said he feared Dean is a flight risk because of the amount of cash
they found in his house and his previous criminal record. Deanwas arrested in 2000 for solicitation of a prostitute and convicted in 1991 of assault with a dangerous weapon. Police believe he still may have a large amount of money at his disposal, pointing out that he paid for more than $100,000 of landscaping to his home in cash. Police are working to identify the people who bet on the illegal dog fights in Exeter, Lapro said, adding they would face charges of gambling. "This type of activity brings in people with criminal backgrounds," the chief said. The break in the case Exeter Police had been investigating Dean since shortly after he moved into the upscale neighborhood three years ago, with seven pit bulls.

They finally received the break they needed after an exchange that took place on Jan. 9 between Dean and a man he fired from his job offeeding and caring for the dogs. Details of how police were able to arrest Dean and obtain a search warrant for his house and property were revealed during the arraignment. Mansfield said the man who was fired came forward to police last week after he lost his job. The man told police he saw almost 50 dogs, many with scars and injuries, in the Quonset hut in the woods behind Dean's house. The former employee was ordered to leave the property before 11 a.m. every day, but one day was late. He allegedly witnessed steroids, hypodermic needles and pills being brought to the dogs.

Dean allegedly threatened the employee's girlfriend, telling her if she told anyone what she had seen on the property, "something could happen to (her) daughter," a criminal complaint reads. Based on that information, police were able to obtain a warrant to search the house and property. Many complaints When Dean moved to the plush neighborhood on 1 Tamarind Ln , neighbors immediately began to complaint about the noise from the barking dogs behind his house. The dogs were initially chained to 50-gallon barrels and left outside all the time, said one neighbor who asked not to be identified.

The raid on Dean's home and dogs is the latest piece in a puzzle his neighbors have been trying to solve since he moved in. Just last weekend, a group of neighbors was talking and making informal bets about what type of illegal business at which they suspect he makes his living, said a neighbor who asked not to be named. No one in the neighborhood socialized with Dean, who told them he worked for Harvard University, the neighbor said. However, they suspected he didn't work, because he was always home riding motorcycles or ATVs.

Dean told police he was a nuclear engineer, Lapro said, although they have no proof of his career. Lapro said Wednesday that Dean worked as a computer systems analyst at Harvard, but has been out on medical leave since November owing to a back injury. After police took Dean to court based on complaints from neighbors about the noise from the dogs about 18 months ago,a judge ordered that some type of building be constructed, Mansfield said. That's when Dean built the Quonset hut. The hut, which is accessed by a road next to the large tan Cape-style home, has a large parking area and a two-floor garage adjacent to it. One neighbor said he often saw expensive cars such as Corvettes and Mercedes pulling into Dean's driveway, with drivers who did not look like they could afford the cars.

The raid on Dean's home occurred Tuesday morning just after 11:30 a.m. and involved participation from police in Exeter, Kingston, Plaistow and State Police, as well as animal welfare workers from across New Hampshire and Massachusetts. For several hours before the actual raid, two local police officers clad in winter camouflage and armed with rifles hid in the woods behind the hut. They were in radio contact with Mansfield and the other authorities about the activity around the house. "It was a major effort to get it all put together," Mansfield said. Dean was called to the exeter Police station Tuesday morning, where he was arrested. He was arrested before the raid because police were concerned he might have access to weapons or try to retaliate during the raid.

Those helping with the rescue were divided into three teams, two law enforcement teams and one animal rescue worker team. Few were home in the neighborhood as an orderly chain of police cars pulled into the driveway of Dean's home with burgundy shutters and an elaborate stone wall. The police in the first team gathered outside the front door and Mansfield knocked. A woman, who was later identified as the housekeeper, answered the door. She left shortly after police arrived toting her vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies. The second team of policei mmediately went to the hut where the dogs were kept. The third team in a contingent of about a dozen animal rescue vans and trucks arrived within 10 minutes of the initial
police arrival.

Rescue workers assessed the condition of each dog they found, taking pictures and documenting the injuries. Many dogs had visible scars on the body, pieces oftheir ears ripped off and missing toes. Despite the conditions, the animal control officers brought in to help remove the animals did not use tranquilizers or restraints to move the animals. Most were wagging their tails at the rescuers and went willingly in to crates and vans, Mansfield said. While the majority of the dogs were held in cages inside the Quonset hut, seven were chained outside to dog houses. Some of the dogs had been "debarked" or had their vocal cords removed, Mansfield said. Neighbors believe that
the debarking is why they never suspected the total number of dogs Dean owned. Despite their dog houses, the outside dogs were visibly shaking from cold.

Ridiculous Claims

#8General Comment

Mon, September 27, 2010

As being a good friend of the Geary's for nearly 6 years I feel I must take a moment to re-enforce how ridiculous these claims are. I have personally been involved in the care of her animals in the past, dog or otherwise, and I can assure anyone that these animals received above and beyond the standards for care. Each animal they come into contact with is valued for it's unique personality and given love and care as though they are their children. Any animal lover knows that if you give an animal love and care they will return that same to you. All of the animals under the care of the Geary's are loving, good natured and healthy and they go to great lengths to make sure this is the case every time with every animal.

Also, having been good friends with the Geary's for many years I can confidently stand behind my statement that they certainly DO NOT even come within the vicinity of crack or anything else of that nature for that matter and never would. They would be the first to help nurture someone away from addictions before ever giving into one. Integrity is a standard in the Geary household and whomever took it upon themselves to slander these good people is a shining example of someone to avoid. Clearly someone had way to much time and way to little maturity to approach them with their concerns and has decided to spread lies and try to ruin their good name. I highly recommend the Geary's as excellent breeders with a wealth of knowledge and a drive to obtain any information they do not have readily available. Please ignore the report as it was written by a very mean and ignorant person.

Sincerely,

Terrin
Friend of 6 years

This report is false & can easily be proven so with a little research.

To Whom it May Concern:

I am veterinary technican at the clinic that treats the Geary's pit bulls and I can say without hesitation that the House of Blues is a responsible breeding kennel that cares very much & very well for their dogs. I have met and spent time with each dog from their household on various occasions and can say that they are well-tempered, well behaved & beautiful.

These are the kind of Pit Bulls that every lover of the breed wants to see - true ambassadors of the breed. And the Gearys are the kind of breeders that every vet would like to see - responsible, knowledgeable & friendly. Anyone who discusses the breed with them for even a few minutes can tell how extensive their Pit Bull knowledge is & how dedicated they are to bettering the breed.

The person who posted this report initially was a prospective customer who became upset when the Gearys would not allow him to purchase a dog because they feared he would mistreat the dog. Any breeder who is more interested in the dog's welfare than in the money to be made from selling to dog is OK in my book! If you take the "headline" from the "news report" that the poster provided and plug it in to Google, you'll see that the poster stole the entire news story from an ACTUAL story about a bad pit bull breeder in Newton, NH in 2002. The Gearys are not and never have been accused of mistreating their dogs, and it is very upsetting that such a vindictive person would try to hurt them in this way. Please do not be put off by this totally false accusation - if you're looking for a wonderful Pit Bull, please call Geary's House of Blues to discuss. You'll be happy that you did!

Strange emails from strange people. Read and judge for yourself

#8REBUTTAL Owner of company

Wed, August 06, 2008

Not all the emails were posted in my first rebuttle for some reason,....weird.
So here they are once again. I want everyone to see what I went through.
I need to make it clear I never knew of Hatch at all beforehand. Nor was I prepared to be stalked over the internet for telling someone NO!
We are not dogfighters at all, this was a plagerized story with our details inserted.
You can go to Google yourself and look everything up. We're not involved in anything that cruel.
I was a professional breeder doing my job and you will be able to see that for yourselves

Below you will see the reason for my feelings on certain things via the actual emails exchanged between Hatch and I.

HE WROTE TO ME FIRST:
jamiehatch@englishbulldog.us wrote:
Hi Could you please send me pictures of the parents and the female pup Thanks.
Jamiehatch@englishbulldog.us

THEN I WROTE BACK:
What is your intent with a female pitbull on an English Bulldog yard???????

THEN HE SAID:
I own a 102 lb Razors Edge Blue male. Razors Egde Platinum Blue Ice.Send me some pictures and pedigree info.

This is the next series of emails.

This our own bloodline: Purple Ribbon XXXXXXXXX. We aren't selling pups to the public for breeding, Sir. All are being sold on Spay/Neuter contracts only. This is exclusive to us and we DO NOT want our pups being part of any else's breeding program.

AND HE RESPONDED LIKE THIS:
jamiehatch@englishbulldog.us wrote:
Thats all right they probably arent up to my high standards. I was wondering why they we so cheap.

SO THIS WAS MY RESPONSE:

They are older puppies Sir, we only have a couple left from our litter of 10 thank you very much.... and if you truly were looking for a 'good; dog and price was a factor, why would you have emailed me in the first place.
Money is not the reason we breed, we just want the pups to have good pet homes,
You were rude and insulting in the first email, didn't even leave your name.
Then I go to your website and find an AKC bull terrier female for sale for 500 bucks??
Who are you calling 'cheap' when you have a breed you don't even specialize in for sale on your website??? Excuse me for not wanting you to do that to my female, exploit her on your site like that. And I'm all set with you using her for a bang bag with your 102lb male.
You seem like a redneck hick with an attitude problem, I'm all set with dealing with you, bub.

If I were in his shoes and I were asking another breeder about a breeding dog, I would address them properly, explain who I was and my experience, then relay my proposal for purchasing a breeding dog. I would want the other person to be comfortable selling me a dog, I pass that same respect to all my own satisfied customers. I was NOT comfortable with Hatch and that's why I denied him.
I became upset with Mr. Hatch when he insulted me so I gave it back to him a little. I was insulted and frustrated! I could have said alot worse!
Instead I merely stated how I felt as far as dealing with him after that remark!

You know, if I had been told by another breeder that I couldn't breed a dog purchased from them, I would listen to their reasons WHY!
Chances are it's not to be mean, there is a reason for it!
Some people have exclusive lines, dogs, awards, all kinds of great things that they wish for their name to be attached to. Is it so wrong to want your name to remain unblemished in the dog world???
There was no need for him to insult me because I told him no!
He could have moved on to another ad.
I wasn't telling Hatch he was a bad breeder at all!! All I was saying is I'd like to keep our name pure! He could have respected my answer.
Hatch stopped contacting me from his own email after the last message.
And I went back to minding my own business.
Weeks go by with no further contact from Hatch, until I posted a new ad in the Uncle Henry's.
Hatch's 'friend' or whatever, Nicole Cline, emails me from her personal account.
I recall her email looking very familiar, but I still treated Ms. Cline with respect nonetheless.
I treat every inquiry with the decency and respect people deserve, I make my judgement afterwards.
I exchanged a few emails with Nicole Cline and when I stopped hearing back from her, I entered her email address in GOOGLE and found she was in fact part of Hatch's kennel.
I had turned down Hatch and now SHE contacts me asking about puppies??? That's weird. So I asked Ms. Cline to explain herself.
Below are the emails exchanged.

Hi,I was wondering if you could email me some pictures of your available
puppies?
Thank you,
Nicole

I emailed her some pictures and strangely I didn't hear back, which I found strange, so I inquired cautiously:
I RESPONDED WITH:
Hi Nicole,
Are you still interested in a puppy from us?? I sent a reply and haven't heard back from you yet. I can send you new pics of the pups to your cell phone if it accepts picture messages.
My digicam is broken unfortunately :-(
I have two males left, one person is interested in the female I have.
One male is larger, platinum silver with white and the other male is slightly smaller, medium blue with more white on him. I can arrange a showing if you'd like to see them in person but please let me know if you're interested.
Thanks

SHE RESPONDED WITH:
No thanks I was looking for a pup with more bone structure, with great substance and type, and larger chest. Sorry They are probably nice pet quality, but not what im looking for.

So she sends me the message just to INSULT me? She thought she could weasle a pup from me on Hatch's behalf, what else am I supposed to think when I find out they are AFFILIATED with eachother and I already told Hatch no??!
It was after all this run-around, that I became upset and lashed out at Nicole, I called her bluff on Hatch and below you can see the response.

I WROTE TO NICOLE:
Wow, you're part of that puppy mill up in Maine huh??? I should have known that redneck Jaime Hatch put you up to this, He's already on my s**t List. English Bulldogs, Papillions AND an Unspayed Bull Terrier??? NO LICENSE NUMBER IN SIGHT!! In Maine you legally need to have that s--- posted you know.
You pitiful hicks came back for more just to insult me back after the email I sent Jaime?
Wow, I should report your kennel and it's managerie of breeds....You seem awfully sketchy.... especially since I didn't find your Razor's Edge Platinum Blue Ice on the internet OR the UKC registry. There is no record of that male anywhere.
Oh yeah, you're standards can't be THAT high! A 102lb male is either mixed with Mastiff or MORBIDLY OBESE!!!!! Are you dogfighters?????

So yes, I did ask if they were dog fighters and I called them a puppy mill, after what Nicole did to try to get a dog for Jamie from me, can you honestly blame me for saying what I said and thinking those thoughts????
From posting in the Uncle Henry's, it said if you were from Maine, you needed to provide your breeders number. I didn't see one on the site, so I questioned.
I had also Googled the Platinum Blue Ice dog and nothing came up.
Curious, I had called the UKC and they couldn't find anything on this dog.
I was never sent any pictures from Hatch nor any pedigree copies. There was no picture of the pitbull on their website.
It was a weird situation that I was thrust into.
Nicole, however, DENIED any involvement with Hatch, read on.

Nicole's response is below:

I don't know who you are or what you are talking about. I am from Canada. I am sure your dogs are great but just not what I am looking for. My best friend has a Pitbull and I want one that looks like hers and yours do not.You really shouldn't go off on complete stangers like some kind of lunatic. Get your facts straight.

She denies any involvement with Hatch, and so much for out right LYING to me!
Pitbulls are BANNED in Canada! Why would two people who claim to be professionals have resorted to actions like this??? Please! Someone! Explain!
I'm scratching my head myself!
Below is my final message to Nicole, to which she never responded.

I WROTE BACK:
I HAVE my facts straight. YOU are associated with Jamie Hatch, You are the PAPILLON lady. He had you message me just so he could gawk at my dogs.
You are from Maine. I saw your email on Jamie's website.

I was minding my own business in New Hampshire trying to find loving homes for my pups and these people wouldn't take NO for an answer!
So time goes by and I posted a 3rd ad with Uncle Henry's after the last one ran out.
I was contacted by a woman called 'Shelly' on a Tuesday.
This 'woman' (and you see why I'm using quotes in a second!) contacted me regarding pups. I was professional and happy to assist her, however I did get a weird feeling about her email.
It was a free Yahoo account and it wasn't attached to any documents on Google or a Myspace profile.
I proceded with caution.
Below are the emails exchanged between myself and this 'Shelly'.

Hi,
Do you have any puppies left? The parents are gorgeous! how are there
temperments? Would it be possible for me to meet the parents?
Sincerly,
Shelly

I RESPONDED WITH:
I have two males left. A really big, stocky male and a smaller more streamlined male. Both are lovable, smart and very eager to learn.Mom and Dad are tempermentally sound and 100% approachable by ALL people. We wouldn't have it any other way...And yes, you're more than welcome to arrange a showing to come to our home and meet everyone. We are a small hobby breeder in Exeter New Hampshire striving to provide, safe, healthy blue pitbulls free from behavioral and skin issues, which skin issues are VERY common in this color of the breed if you do not know what you're doing. This is first generation xxxxx, our own bloodline of this dog. We have spent years researching, selecting a breeding pair and have had many lengthy conversations with our vet. This is the manifestation of all our hard work and effort.Everyone whom has purchased from us has been nothing short of delighted, we have recieved much praise for our efforts to keep our beloved breed true and correct.Mom and Dad are clear of any skin issues and we have NEVER had to pay the vet to treat any. The puppies skin is guaranteed and vet references are available. These are our last two pups from our October litter and once they're gone, they're gone and we won't breed the parents again for approximately XX years.Normally, we sell the pups right at 8 weeks for $xxxx a piece but because these pups are older and we don't care about the money we make, we just want to insure good homes for them. That's what matters most to us.
Please let me know if you're interested in coming by, we could arrange a showing for as soon as this coming Sunday or Monday, if your schedule allows.Do call me at: xxx-xxx-xxxThank you and have a great day, Shelly.

'SHELLY'S' RESPONSE:
Hi xxxxxxxxx,
Thank you for getting back to me. I am at work right now so I can give you a call tonight when I get home. I would be very interested in coming to see them. I will just have to check and see when I could make it down. I am from Brunswick, Maine.Do you know approximatly how far you are from Brunswick? I forgot to ask before, I have a cat, have the puppies been around cats at all?

Thanks for you time,
Shelly

I REPLIED:
I actually sold a pup to a gentleman in Berwick who owns a cat, and yes, the dog gets along fine with the kitty. :-) The man had called and asked if it would be possible for a pitbull to be raised with a cat. I told him as long as proper socialization measures are carried out, there is no reason the dog and the cat cannot live together. That man is a happy customer and called to report the pup being great with his cat soon after his purchase.I owned two cats and a pitbull together when I lived in XXXXXXX, so I can honestly say, yes it can be done.We do not have any cats here, but I do own a guinea pig and handle her around the puppies. They know to respect what's in 'Grandma's' hands :-).Our puppies are more socialites rather than having a high prey drive. I would reccomend a baby gate during the intro period, you could get one on Freecycle easily, that way if the cat feels stressed at first, he or she can simply hop over the gate to escape.
I'm not sure where Brunswick is, is it closer to the Canadian border as opposed to New Hampshire??? How far is Brunswick from Berwick??I look forward to speaking with you tonight and hope you have a great day.

'Shelly's' Response:
Hi,I am so glad to here that it might all work out with my cat. She is pretty laid back and lazy so I shouldnt have a problem. I just used google map and I am a little over 3 hours from the Maine-New Hampshire border. Shelly

I REPLIED:
I think either male I still have available would be fine with the cat. The larger male is the 'strong, silent type', and might not pay any attention to the cat whatsoever. My other male would probably try to make friends with the cat, he is a curious little guy but he's a wimp so the cat could make the boundaries. :-)My reason for asking if you were close to Canada is because pitbulls are banned in Canada now. :-( I had a couple weird people from Lubec (I think thats how it's spelled.) Maine and they lied to me and claimed to be from Canada. They should have looked into their research before saying they were from Canada, I know all too well that the pitbull isn't welcome there. They were THAT desperate to get a dog from me, they resorted to lying. With specializing in this breed and color, you can imagine some of the weirdo's I got contacting me about them! I'll hold onto them until the right people come along, it's not worth not being able to sleep at night.
I hope everything works out, I'll talk to you tonight.Thank you and have a great day!

After I got this message from 'Shelly', I realized my cell phone wasn't working properly, so I sent 'Shelly' a message giving her my home phone number.
She said she was going to be calling and I wanted her to have a number that worked at the moment. I thought she was a potential customer.
So this is my message to 'Shelly':

Hi Shelly, I wanted to reach you to let you know that my cell phone isn't working right now for some reason, if you'd like, you can call our home number: xxx-xxx-xxxx My husband, XXX, will be home after 5pm, so if he answers, he'll be happy to chat with you about the dogs and pups.If noone answers, just leave a message and we'll be happy to call you back.I just didn't want you to be left hanging if you called my cell and got a fax machine noise!Hehe. Thanks and have a great day

I then went into work that afernoon.

'Shelly' never wound up calling, but when I got home that evening, 7/31/08, I was greeted by an email by JAMIE HATCH in my inbox proudly displaying my personal information!!!
Below is the frightening email from Hatch I recieved after "Shelly" got my home number, sent on the 31st of July 2008:

Hello This is Capt. Hatch of the State of Maine Dept. of Marine resources. I saw your 'report' .... I had to research the orginating I.P. Address of that report and guess who it belongs to

INFO REMOVED:

I did contact my attorney and he will be contacting you shorty. You will have 48 hours to get the report removed or I will see you in court. If I ever hear of anything like this ever again. I will not be giving a warning. I will just file a report. I liked how you tried to write it from a 3rd party stand point, but you made a few mistakes 'nice try'. But Guess you didnt 'research' me like you thought you did. Have a nice day.

This included my full name, my husband's full name, our address and our home phone number.
I began to conclude that this 'Shelly' was actually Hatch.
Rip-Off report does NOT hand out personal information, Hatch claimed he got my info from an I.P. address.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that my home phone number, once obtained by "Shelly" AKA Hatch was entered in a site like whitepages.com and my info came up.
"Shelly" was the only person I gave my home number to!! Hatch was never given my home number!
What does that say about the person who started all this??
Hatch or someone affiliated with Hatch made up an email address just to talk to me.
Being the professional I am, I had treated Shelly like a potential customer until I figured out otherwise.
When I logged in August 1st 2008, there was NO response from Shelly, no apology for her not calling me, however I did recieve one later on and it's displayed below:

From: "Shelly M."
Hi,Sorry I havent been in contact with you. I had a family emergency and I am in New Jersey for the next couple weeks. I was wondering if on my way back through if i could call you and make an appointment to stop by? Hopefully they are still available.Thank,Shelly
Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T

I never sent "Shelly" a response, I was told by my local PD and the Sheriff's department in Maine to ignore any emails from them.
So after this fake report hits the internet, these persons STILL persisted to contact me!
Never bothered to call the number I gave, why would just keep to emails???
ITS SO EASY TO HIDE BEHIND A COMPUTER SCREEN!
I would hate to think what would have happened if I allowed this "Shelly" to come to my house! Who knows what would have happened to my husband, myself or our dogs! These people were relentless enough to make up fake emails to get what they wanted, I do not wish to know of their other intentions.
I have never been stalked on the internet before, when I opened up that email and found my information, I began to fear for me and my family's lives!
Last time I checked, harassment and stalking over the internet was ILLEGAL. Why would these people keep carrying on like this??? If they are someone with a name to carry and a kennel to run, why did they resort to all this trouble and immaturity?
Seriously, why people??????
I have kept all my email correspondance with Hatch and his associates, so if I had to go to court for whatever reason, I have proof that I respectfully turned Hatch down and he wouldn't leave me alone.

The line that hasn't been crossed yet is the criminal harassment line.
If Hatch, Nicole or whomever associated with them begins harassing me over the phone or came to my house, I can then file criminal charges, but so far this has stayed just on the internet. It will take them calling me or showing up at my house to warrent filing harassment charges.

All I can say is they must have REALLY wanted to get a dog from me if they went through all this trouble for it.
You have everything here, black and white and clear as crystal.
The article depicted here was from Newton New Hampshire, a NEWTON MAN was charged with all this stuff and they mearly took the article and inserted our details.
Anyone can copy and paste from the internet!
I didn't deserve to be harassed over the internet and my time wasted on people who weren't who the claimed to be. I have a job to do and these people greatly interfered with that when they put me through the above.
I'm a polite person who will provide a dog to the right people, and as you see, I will turn people down sometimes, but I have my reasons and do explain them.
They couldn't just leave me alone?????
It really makes me wonder.
I won't be lisiting my pups in the Uncle Henry's anymore because of this!
That's exposure I won't be able to get in the future because I am afraid for my pups' wellbeing. This has been such a horrific experience for me, I never want to be put in this position EVER again.
I am an honest breeder who was unfairly stalked and tracked down online.
This entire situation could have been avoided if Hatch had simply respected my wishes and understood my reasons.
We're good breeders with quality dogs and we have our customers and neighbors who would happily back us up.
We welcome our happy customers anytime and pride ourselves for keeping a clean, sanitary facility free from chemicals, we are a GREEN household and active members in recycling.
And I become friends with my customers, it's not just hand me the cash, I hand you the dog and -see-you-later-bye!, we like to become FRIENDS with the happy customers that purchase our dogs!
Anyone who has purchased from us in the past would happily attest to this.
We'd never do the cruel things listed in this article, go to Google yourself and you'll our names had NOTHING to do with this.
I've learned a valuable lesson from all this, the internet really is a free place where ANYONE can run rampant and there's not always a law to protect you from the trash that can be freely put on here.
We have invested in an electronic home security system because of all this.
It's SCARY to see a stranger get your information!
Thank you to everyone who has written in our defense, we really appreciate your continued support. Thank you for speaking out on behalf of who we really are.
Bless you all.

This report is not only false, but completely contrived. The supposed news report was taken about a pit bull ring from near the reported person, but the names have been changed to suit the reporter. This reporter should not only be called out, but sued in court for outright slander.

I happen to know these people that are being wrongfully accused of animal abuse. I can't believe someone would go out of their way to bash good people who are also very good breeders just because they are simply looking out for the welfare of their dogs and may feel a little wiery of where their dogs may end up. That is their right! And truthfully I think it goes to show that they truly care about their dogs as well.

This person that was in contact with my friends to try to get a puppy was under suspision so he/she was denied and then went on to post this story. I will say that this story is true but it's not about these people at all!!!! The real story can be found at http://archive.seacoastonline.com/2002news/rock/r1_18a.htm. For those who don't want to go directly to the address I've made it easier for you by putting it up here so you can see that this story isn't about my friends at all, it's about someone else. I do encourage you to go to the address though so that you can read it for yourself and see that I have not added or deleted anything. You will see the real person and you will see that my friends husband's name was inserted in the original report titled "Geary's House Of BLUES Purple Ribbon American Pitbull Terriers* Raychelle Geary and William Dean Warning DOG FIGHTERS! Arrested for crack, animal cruelty. Exeter NH 603-580-2596 Exeter New Hampshire Geary's House Of BLUES Purple Ribbon American Pitbull Terriers*

Here is the original article:

Newton man faces 76 charges in dog fighting, gambling operation
NEWTON The man charged with running an illegal pit bull fighting ring behind his plush Newton house was eyed by authorities in Massachusetts several years ago as a player in a dog-fighting ring that was under investigation in that state, a source familiar with the case said this week.

The source said that when Christopher DeVito, 33, of 37 Williamine Drive, learned the ring was being investigated, he moved out of the area and eventually ended up in the upscale Newton neighborhood, where he was arrested Tuesday morning.

DeVito was arraigned in Exeter District Court on Wednesday morning, where he was charged with 37 counts of cruelty to animals, 37 counts of exhibition of fighting animals, criminal threatening and possession of narcotic drugs.

Exeter District Court Judge Laurence Cullen set DeVito's bail at $125,000 cash and $125,000 personal recognizance. DeVito's attorney Gerry LaFlamme said DeVito was planning to post bail Wednesday afternoon. However, he still remained in jail Thursday afternoon.

Police believe they put a dent in a major illegal dog-fighting ring with the arrest and seizure of the dogs this week.

"I believe it was a high-level professional dog-fighting operation with this individual being the leader of the pack," Newton Police Chief Richard Labell said.

Police seized 37 dogs, including eight puppies, from a Quonset hut behind DeVito's house during a raid Tuesday morning. Police were shocked by the battle scars some of the dogs had, including one missing a tongue and another with two broken legs that never received veterinary attention.

"I just took a walk through the Quonset hut," Labell said at the scene, adding the dogs were friendly and wagging their tails. "It breaks your heart to see these dogs because they're on death row."

Initially, they believed there were 50 dogs, but later determined there were fewer. They believe DeVito ran a professional pit bull-fighting business out of a two-floor gray garage adjacent to a Quonset hut that housed the dogs. In the upstairs of the garage, police found a fighting arena, dog treadmill, a scale and steroids.

The entire area, including the stairs up to the arena, was covered in blood. Police said the going rate for betting on a dog fight runs from $5,000 to $100,000.

While searching DeVito's home, police found $300,000 in cash in his bedroom, banded together in $5,000 bundles, Labell said.

Police in Newton have received many calls already from people who want to adopt or help the dogs. At this time, they are working with animal experts in Massachusetts and New Hampshire to determine if the dogs will be able to be adopted out. Labell said the advice he had received so far from the animal welfare agencies is that the dogs will not be able to go into homes.

"At times, they will fight to the death; it's a barbaric sport," Labell said.

But Labell said he has been advised by the animal rescue workers that the puppies are from a strong fighting bloodline and may not be able to be saved.

LaFlamme said his client is innocent and questioned the merits of the police case against DeVito. LaFlamme said there is no evidence that dog fights had actually been held on the property.

"This is not unusual for an individual to house this many pit bulls," LaFlamme said. He insisted his client is not a danger to the community and would not flee from the area if he posts bail. He pointed out that DeVito's wife is a teacher in the Timberlane Regional School District.

Labell said he feared DeVito is a flight risk because of the amount of cash they found in his house and his previous criminal record. DeVito was arrested in 2000 for solicitation of a prostitute and convicted in 1991 of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police believe he still may have a large amount of money at his disposal, pointing out that he paid for more than $100,000 of landscaping to his home in cash.

Police are working to identify the people who bet on the illegal dog fights in Newton, Labell said, adding they would face charges of gambling.

"This type of activity brings in people with criminal backgrounds," the chief said.
The break in the case

Newton Police had been investigating DeVito since shortly after he moved into the upscale neighborhood three years ago, with seven pit bulls.

They finally received the break they needed after an exchange that took place on Jan. 9 between DeVito and a man he fired from his job of feeding and caring for the dogs.

Details of how police were able to arrest DeVito and obtain a search warrant for his house and property were revealed during the arraignment.

Labell said the man who was fired came forward to police last week after he lost his job.

The man told police he saw almost 50 dogs, many with scars and injuries, in the Quonset hut in the woods behind DeVito's house. The former employee was ordered to leave the property before 11 a.m. every day, but one day was late. He allegedly witnessed steroids, hypodermic needles and pills being brought to the dogs.

DeVito allegedly threatened the employee's girlfriend, telling her if she told anyone what she had seen on the property, "something could happen to (her) daughter," a criminal complaint reads.

Based on that information, police were able to obtain a warrant to search the house and property.

Many complaints

When DeVito moved to the plush neighborhood on Williamine Drive, neighbors immediately began to complaint about the noise from the barking dogs behind his house. The dogs were initially chained to 50-gallon barrels and left outside all the time, said one neighbor who asked not to be identified.

The raid on DeVito's home and dogs is the latest piece in a puzzle his neighbors have been trying to solve since he moved in.

Just last weekend, a group of neighbors was talking and making informal bets about what type of illegal business at which they suspect he makes his living, said a neighbor who asked not to be named.

No one in the neighborhood socialized with DeVito, who told them he worked for Harvard University, the neighbor said. However, they suspected he didn't work, because he was always home riding motorcycles or ATVs. DeVito told police he was a nuclear engineer, Labell said, although they have no proof of his career.

LaFlamme said Wednesday that DeVito worked as a computer systems analyst at Harvard, but has been out on medical leave since November owing to a back injury.

After police took DeVito to court based on complaints from neighbors about the noise from the dogs about 18 months ago, a judge ordered that some type of building be constructed, Labell said. That's when DeVito built the Quonset hut. The hut, which is accessed by a road next to the large tan Cape-style home, has a large parking area and a two-floor garage adjacent to it.

One neighbor said he often saw expensive cars such as Corvettes and Mercedes pulling into DeVito's driveway, with drivers who did not look like they could afford the cars.

The raid

The raid on DeVito's home occurred Tuesday morning just after 11:30 a.m. and involved participation from police in Newton, Kingston, Plaistow and State Police Troop A, as well as animal welfare workers from across New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

For several hours before the actual raid, two local police officers clad in winter camouflage and armed with rifles hid in the woods behind the hut. They were in radio contact with Labell and the other authorities about the activity around the house.

"It was a major effort to get it all put together," Labell said.

DeVito was called to the Newton Police station Tuesday morning, where he was arrested. He was arrested before the raid because police were concerned he might have access to weapons or try to retaliate during the raid.

Those helping with the rescue were divided into three teams, two law enforcement teams and one animal rescue worker team.

Few were home in the neighborhood as an orderly chain of police cars pulled into the driveway of DeVito's home with burgundy shutters and an elaborate stone wall.

The police in the first team gathered outside the front door and Labell knocked. A woman, who was later identified as the housekeeper, answered the door. She left shortly after police arrived toting her vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies.

The second team of police immediately went to the hut where the dogs were kept. The third team in a contingent of about a dozen animal rescue vans and trucks arrived within 10 minutes of the initial police arrival.

Rescue workers assessed the condition of each dog they found, taking pictures and documenting the injuries. Many dogs had visible scars on the body, pieces of their ears ripped off and missing toes.

Despite the conditions, the animal control officers brought in to help remove the animals did not use tranquilizers or restraints to move the animals. Most were wagging their tails at the rescuers and went willingly in to crates and vans, Labell said.

While the majority of the dogs were held in cages inside the Quonset hut, seven were chained outside to dog houses. Some of the dogs had been "debarked" or had their vocal cords removed, Labell said. Neighbors believe that the debarking is why they never suspected the total number of dogs DeVito owned.

Despite their dog houses, the outside dogs were visibly shaking from cold.

#8REBUTTAL Owner of company

Sat, August 02, 2008

Hello.
I am one of the two owners of this kennel.
This whole mess started when I myself, filed a Rip-Off report against persons in Maine who were harassing me trying to get a dog for possibly illegal purposes.
They harassed me over the internet and wouldn't take NO for an answer.
I filed a report and in that report I did specify I thought they were dog fighters and possibly a puppy mill.
....Now they have lashed out back at me.

First, go to Google and research the names they have provided and look up dogfighting ring in Exeter, it doesn't exist: This story that was written here, our details were mearely inserted.
In the report I filed against the people from Maine, the same person who wrote this about us filed a rebuttle for he people in the Maine, in his story, he claims "William Dean" was arrested in 1998 for dogfighting and also for smoking crack.

Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that lots of people have the same name in this world, but the William here isn't Dean AND in 1998, he would have been 12 YEARS OLD!!! Shows how well they 'know' who we are.
Secondly, we're not drug users, especially not at age 12!

Anyone who knows us and who we really are would know that all this is bull.

Doesn't it strike you as strange that the person who posted this used the same location and the same handle that I had used to post on here?
His handle includes an extra 123, but it's the same one I made up to post on here.
What does that say about that person???? If he or she was anyone honest, they would have put their names.

We live in New Hampshire, where there are no kennel laws.

So us being 'unlicensed' has nothing to do with us, but rather the state we live in.
We aren't required to have one but all our dogs on the property are licensed with the town and the town is aware we are a kennel.
We are set back in the woods and our closest neighbor is many yards away.

I have never recieved any complaints for barking, and I know the dog officer here in town by his first name. If he had an issue, he'd come speak to us about it.

We only have ONE breeding pair, nowhere near the tons of dogs described in the fake article, anyone who has purchased from us would back us up.

We also raise our dogs indoors, a far cry from 'being tied to barrels' and chained up!
These are people who looked up dogfighting articles and mearly inserted our names and details.

I urge you to search RipOff Report for Jamie Hatch and Nicole Cline, Luv-A-Bull Kennel in Maine. You will see what I went through, I was frightened of these people enough to file a report and you will see the emails exchanged below.

I'm not too worried about this, as it doesn't take much to hide behind a computer screen and make up stuff.

Anyone that truly wishes to see for themselves, do go to Google and research our names yourself, you will see NONE of these articles come up.
All I can say is I must have had some good intuition the day these whackos from Maine came into my life. I refused the sale of a dog and they wouldn't let up!

I have never had any affiliations with dogfighting, as a concerned breeder, I must specify for legal reasons when I place ads that no dogs are bred or sold for illegal purposes. Any respectable breeder will list that, and for the record, I started listing it in ads AFTER I was contacted by Jamie Hatch, Nicole Cline and their associates.

I did what I felt was right and told them no, now look at what they did in retaliation.
Below are the actual emails exchanged between Jamie Hatch and Nicole Cline:

HE WROTE TO ME FIRST:
jamiehatch@englishbulldog.us wrote:
Hi Could you please send me pictures of the parents and the female pup Thanks.
Jamiehatch@englishbulldog.us

THEN I WROTE BACK:
What is your intent with a female pitbull on an English Bulldog yard???????

THEN HE SAID:
I own a 102 lb Razors Edge Blue male. Razors Egde Platinum Blue Ice.Send me some pictures and pedigree info.

His first email to me was very vague. As you could see, he said minimal words and when I responded, I asked a question in the same vague way. I asked an honest question.
I had seen the email address and went to the English Bulldog site. I saw a few wrinkly bullies and the Papillons, but there was a 5 year old female English Bull Terrier female Jamie was advertising as UNSPAYED for $500.
I was curious as to what he wanted a pitbull for, there was no picture of any pitbull on that website.

Mr. Hatch had no reason to be that rude to me. I was in no way rude to his enquiry and I feel I was more than fair and explanitory in my responses to Hatch.
I was polite and even continued to call him Sir after he insulted my dogs like that.
I thought another breeder would UNDERSTAND something like that!! I wasn't expecting him to be so mean! If I were in his shoes and I were asking another breeder about a breeding dog, I would address them properly, explain who I was and my experience, then relay my proposal for purchasing a breeding dog. I would want the other person to be comfortable selling me a dog, I pass that same respect to all my own satisfied customers.
I became upset with Mr. Hatch when he insulted me so I gave it back to him a little. I was insulted and frustrated! I could have said alot worse!

So there you have it. What we have here are some people who got angry I lashed out at them and called them dogfighters first, maybe I was a little harsh when I said that, but look what they put me through!
They could have simply moved on to another ad in the Uncle Henry's instead of bothering me.
And BTW, what was so wrong for advertising in Uncle Henry's? That's what it's there for and lots of people use it!
After this experience, I will not be using that magazine again. People in Maine don't know when to backoff and leave me alone.
It's only the internet and unfortunately the laws are very different when it applies to slander on the internet.
Police 'monitering' of these types of situations runs very expensive and doesn't end up being worth it in the long run, that's what I was told by our local PD and the Maine Sheriff's Department.
So if you're not smart enough to go to Google yourself and see that all that was written regarding us is false, chances are you're not somebody we want to be around anyways.
We have done nothing wrong here. We chose to turn down an individual and we got harassed via email until no end and now we have wound up on this site because I fought back against the people who wouldn't stop.
I have our happy customers and our neighbors in the neighborhood we live in that will have no problem sticking up for us.

Respond to this Report!
