I decided to change my home insurance as my last company upped the premium 70%, so I called Geico, Travellers and they gave me a quote of 1097.00. They had a replacement cost on the house much higher than the last insurance company of 376,000. My house is appraised at 271,000 by the county. The last insurance company had the replacement cost at 330,000. So that was fine I took the premium for 1097.00 after giving them the details of my house and the county sq footage which was 2600 sq feet which does not include basements. Then a few weeks later I get a letter saying they sent an inspector to my house who measured the outside of the house and NOW the replacement value is 571,000. This also increased my premium to $1830. They say they don't use the county sq footage and they also include the garage as sq footage also. They also INSIST that you are insured to replacement value which is very convenient for them. This seems an obvious scam to me, the guy on the phone with the same information gave me a replacement value of 376,000 knowing the county square footage and knowing that this would not include the garage. Is there any way I can get out of this contract? I am very surprised Buffet puts his name behind a company like this. I now have a more expensive policy than the one I changed from and I lost the auto/home insurance discount from my auto insurance.

Contact your state insurance commissioner in Kansas at 1-800-432-2484 (in Kansas only) to see what your rights are. If you go back to your old insurance company, then you should be able to cancel with Travelers. They then should only charge you from when you signed up with Travelers to when you cancel with them. But make sure you have insurance on your home before you cancel. If they issue you a refund check, be patient as it will probably take a couple of weeks.
