In January of this year I was contacted by General Revenue Corp regarding defaulted student loans. I qualified for a rehabilitation program which lasted for nine months. I paid all nine months on time and when it came to the tenth month I spoke with my rep whose name was Mary and she told me I had completed successfully but due to the economic situation there were no lenders buying student loans at this time.

I had two options: to stay with GRC or try the William B Ford consolidation group. I stayed with GRC and asked Mary to push my October payment out until Nov 10th . Mary agreed and got two supervisiors on the line named Natalie and Laura. I called back today and talked to my new rep Tabitha who said I was no longer in the program because I had defaulted on Octobers payment. She said my bank had stopped payment at my request. I checked my account and found that they had put the payment through on Nov 6th. I told Tabitha who by the way was extremely rude and she said there was nothing in the notes stating that it was to be pushed back. I hung up in frustration.

I decided to call back againg and spoke with a Linda wilson who stated that she did see where I had talked to Mary on Oct 23rd and that the payment was rescheduled for the 10th but GRC had put it through early. Linda was very nice about it, but said she knew it was not my fault but that there was nothing I could do.

This is NOT my fault but I have to reapply to the rehab program and wait another 9 months and hope this does not happen again. I have no idea what my recourse would be. But have written to the attorney generals in OH, NY and my home state of IL. Anyone with any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated

You can't blame GRC for the state of the economy. Consolidations aren't going through, banks aren't purchasing new loans ... there's absolutely nothing they can do about it. Like most companies, they're caught between their original promises and a stark new reality.

Chances are, your grievances regarding the skipped payment won't go very far. A) The rehab program has very specific rules, indicating that payments have to be on-time (within 15 days of the due-date) and consecutive. No matter who's at fault - you, the bank, GRC ... a missed payment is a missed payment. The government doesn't care, and will kick you out of the program. B) If a grievance were responded too, the best they can do is give you credit for the October payment ... that's not going to change the status of your loan, at all. Because no one is picking up loans, you're tied to GRC indefinitely, and will be making your monthly payments to them.

My suggestion would be to do the Ford Program. It offers the same benefits as the rehab program, but pulls your loan out of default within 90 days.
