I am starting this thread in order to see what the people of our great country think about the Bush Administration's abilities to run this country the way it should be; for the people and by the people. I am neither a Republican or a Democrat, and have views on both sides of the fence depending upon the discussion. What I don't want to start here is a volley of name calling and argumentative postings. What I would like to see is good clean discussion about the issues and how they personnaly effect all of us. Regardless of what some people say, it is very possible to have a political discussion without mudslinging. We, the people of the United States of America, should be the ones coming together and deciding where this country needs to go.

I am going to start the discussion with two issues that have been coming to the surface quite a bit lately on Public Television news shows, the Newwork News, and most all other news channels both on television and the radio...Wire Tapping and The Illegal Alien issue.

What are your views on what the limitations of the Government's ability to tap into our lives should be; where should the lines be drawn, and how should they be drawn? What are your views on the current debate over Illegal Immigration, and how do you think the situation we are currently in should be handled.

Once I receive a response I will respond and start the discussion off. Welcome one and welcome all, this discussion is now at its beginning.

Regards,

Stephen

I'm a little late on this issue but the last response to the illegal immigration epidemic was rather intriguing to me.

Absent building a 1951 mile fence, patrolled with armed personnel, dogs and reinforced by minefields this entire effort is futile. Should we build a fence such as this? Words come to mind - "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall...

Odd, how we held the Soviets in contempt for building a wall to keep those in their control "In". Our revulsion was fueled by the inhumane and impoverished conditions these people suffered, in our interest of human rights. Now, we propose doing the opposite. We wish to build a "wall" to keep those who are impoverished and living in inhumane conditions OUT. Rather hypocritical.

The wall you speak of was a forced separation of families and a forced imprisonment of the people on either side. That wall was not built as a direct result of terrorists crossing their boarders and wreaking havoc of epic proportions. I don't think people were rushing across land and literally decimating it with garbage, junk and trash either. Has anyone seen the desert lately? It's atrocious. There are also ways for ANYONE on God's green earth to come to America LEGALLY. If you start out breaking our laws then OF COURSE we're going to be pissed off.

What's odd really is how someone so easily forgets that the Soviets built that wall out of hate and how Americans are building a wall out of necessity. Necessary because ILLEGAL'S refuse to abide by our laws and become a part of our wonderful melting pot through the proper channelsnecessary because they are costing us trillions in unpaid taxes, school fees and medical carenecessary because not only can Mexican illegal's cross our boarders but also terrorists of any nationality as well. And by the way, this wall will not keep people FROM leaving the US. :)

I don't know why it's so hard for some people to comprehend that America has every right, just like every other country, to enforce its laws. Maybe this little analogy will help you better understand: Take your front door off the hinges right now. Let anyone who wants to, come in. Let them eat your food, wear your clothes, take your hard earned money for health care and schooling. Then when you're sinking farther and farther in debt and you want to put your door back up to keep them out, you realize someone stole your door and more are on their way.

Comparing America to the Soviet Union is just ludicrous beyond words.

Illegals and their removal

#10Consumer Comment

Fri, May 19, 2006

"If you are found to be in this county without following the laws we already have....then you will be forced to leave....period."

As you may be aware this occurs daily. Illegals apprehended by the Border Patrol are processed and bussed back across the border sometimes within hours. When an illegal is located by the INS the process takes longer, but they are removed from the country after processing.

With most, despite who apprehended them, it is generally less than 48 hours for most of these illegals to cross the border again.

The focus, at least initially, should not be to spend millions locating and removing those already here. The initial focus should be to close the border to their entry.

One bill in the senate proposes building a 370 mile triple layered fence along the southern border. 370 miles for a border that stretches 1951 miles in total length. Does it sound as if this will be effective? For those wishing to enter the country it will simply drive them to areas that are not fenced.

Absent building a 1951 mile fence, patrolled with armed personnel, dogs and reinforced by minefields this entire effort is futile. Should we build a fence such as this? Words come to mind - "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall..."

Build a giant trebuchet

We can charge dmission to watch busloads of illegals get launched back into their own country. Either that, or let them place a brick in the wall as the go back. They can help build it that way.

Seriously, Ben is right(gasp, choke, gag). If out Governments would simply enforce the existing laws, there would be no problems.

As for Wire Tapping, so what? The only calls that were tapped, were international calls(NOT illegal), and those that were made to/from known terrorists and US contacts.

The phone records issue is a non-issue. The NSA got phone RECORDS. You call them bills. President Clinton signed the bill into law allowing the tactic to be used in 1994. In 1998, he had the NSA create another division for the sole purpose of collecting phone records, emails, etc.

Since the days of Constitutional Government are long gone, why not just sit back and watch as the Country goes to hell. We can always work on that trebuchet.

Send illegal aliens home

#10Consumer Comment

The moment the illegal alien crossed the border, they became a criminal. The whole thing with amnesty and guest worker programs will not work unless serious measures are taken to stop the flood of illegals from continuing to invade our nation.

States are aiding and abetting these criminals by allowing them to: obtain driver licenses, enroll their children in our schools, work without fear of reprisals, allowing them to vote on a ballot printed in their native tongue, etc.

The illegal aliens are demanding rights that are afforded legal citizens, when they have no right to be here to begin with. There are legal ways to gain entry, but they refuse to follow the law.

And when they do get here, they refuse to learn English, which in turn means that interpretors are having to be employed by schools, hospitals, government bodies, law enforcement and judicial proceedings at great expense to taxpayers.

Bottom line: NO AMNESTY, NO GUEST WORKER PROGRAMS and NO CITIZENSHIP unless they entered legally and learned to read, write, and speak ENGLISH at an 8th grade proficiency.

1: If a persons actions do no harm to himself, or others, then the government should not be involved in making the decision one way or another about the subject. This can be applied to everything from abortion, homosexuals, religion, etc.

If a person or entity wants the right to a service, ability, or physical tangible object that can be used or mis-used upon another person or entity, then the government (of the people) has the right to restrict, govern, and regulate said service, ability, or pysical tangible object. This can be applied to everything from getting a drivers license, to owning a firearm, to getting a business permit, etc.

2: In regards to immigration, we already have laws. To my knowledge the problem we face now is the inability or lack of effort to enforce the laws we currently have. If this question is solely directed towards the issue currently in the news then my direct answer is this. Illegal aliens.....are ILLEGAL. They have broken our laws. Enforce those laws. If you are found to be in this county without following the laws we already have....then you will be forced to leave....period. If you are an employer found to have purposely avoided the law to employ an illegal worker, then the law should be enforced and the employer punished.

Just ENFORCE the LAW we already have. If it needs to be done dragged kicking and screaming, so be it. Those that became lax on the law over these past years should have thought about that when they decided to sweep the issue under the rug. Now the legal residents of this country must face economic or other ramifications of this inaction. The people of this country do have the right to show their displeasure at the voting booth. Hopefully putting people in place that can do the job correctly. If the laws need to be changed ammended, or completely re-written, that also will be decided at the voting booth. For now, show that we can enforce what we have, before we jump off the diving board and do something drastic.

In the mean time we will just have to take our lumps on the economic front. We have been through worse.

My two cents.....minus names, minus mud, still equals....two cents. 8)
