Since 1999, I have been going to German Performance in Riverside because they specialize in all Volkswagon and Audi cars. I have gotten to know the owner(s) Shawn Setterstrom and his Ex-partner Brett Watson. We had developed a friendship and have been friends for sometime.

Brett and Shawn had a falling out of the business and decided to go there separate ways because of Shawn Setterstroms actions and how he rips off customers. I stayed with German Performance because of the friendship, knowledge history of my car and the good deals. In 2000, I was talked into a deal of installing some turbo items for my car and guaranteed it would be great. It cost me about $5,000.00. Still pretty cheap on the price for what I got.

However, the mechanic that worked on my car (later fired) had no idea what he was doing. They winged it together and cost me $2,000.00 more than I wanted to spend but was guaranteed some extra service and things down the road. In Dec. 2002, I wanted to take the band aid of a turbo they had put in my car and replace it with a better system. I got a low quote and a better mechanic to do the job. I felt good that the job was going to be done right with a friendly price.

The vehicle sat until around Aug 03 and we finally got a quote of how much it would cost to get the upgraded turbo and some extras put into the vehicle as well as saving me money by rebuilding my transmission to work better with the turbo. They handed me a quote for $6,965.47. Shawn(owner) said that in order to get started and ordering parts that I would have to give them a deposit. I gave them $4,000.00. They started to order parts and the car still sat. The parts ordered and paid for sat in my trunk.

I paid the remaining balance in Aug 03, hoping to get the ball rolling. The car was slowly being worked on. I figured don't rock the boat because I was still getting a good deal. In Apr 04, I started to complain and was handed another bill A PADDED BILL! The bill was in the amount of $9,472.47. I called the owner/friend immediately thinking there was a mistake. He snow balled me and gave me some used car salesman answers that resulted in us falling out of a friendship.

I have paid for everything to include the original labor (32 hours) price of $1,460.00. The $1,460.00 included rebuilding my old transmission to save me money. I had bought a new transmission and the price for labor went up to $2,220.00. The car today is still sitting in his shop because I am unable to afford to take it out and pay for another mechanic.

As of Nov 04, my car is running but still undergoing some minor fine tuning to get the car to run right. I have paid to have my car done in a timely fashion and a labor time of 32 hours. It will be 3 years later and $2,500.00 more this December 04. When I call the mechanics they say they are short handed and have to work on the paying customers cars. I respond with me saying how I spent over $9,000.00 in labor and parts. I am the PAID customer! Not paying customer. I have watch him do this to other customers over the years and finally have to put a stop to it.

False Allegations Against German Performance

#5REBUTTAL Owner of company

Thu, June 03, 2010

I am the owner of German Performance. I have chosen to ignore this complaint long enough. I am tired of this negativity affecting my business. So I am here presenting my side of the situation.

This person that filed this complaint about my company (David) used to be a very good friend of mine. So good, in fact, that we almost became business partners. We had a falling out, mainly because I didn't trust him once I found out he was conducting business and stealing profits from behind my back.

No bills or costs were ever "padded" and he was never "ripped-off", just a friendship gone wrong. He had an extreme amount of work done to his vehicle, in which most of the parts were given to him at cost. And the time frame for work to be conducted was never an issue in the beginning because he was an Air Marshall (in which he was fired for LYING, and this also raised caution with me when deciding to go into business with him), and later was in the reserves and was deployed overseas. This was basically a safe place to store the vehicle and have the repairs and upgrades done at our convenience. Once he returned, he was advised to have additional work done (dyno tuning) at an outside independent repair shop, in which he failed to do. So he in turn ruined the motor.

Because at this point he took us to small claims court, I agreed outside of court and without the mediator, in good faith split the cost of repairing the  car, if he in turn realised his mistake and dismissed the case. So the car was fixed, but he had the court hearing postponed until later and still deceptively preceded with the lawsuit, without my knowledge, and a judgment was placed.

The car was fixed, as I said it would be. We repeatedly attempted contact, but with no success. So basically the vehicle was abandoned.

For what it's worth, I feel this website is completely immoral and disrespectful. There are situations, as in this one, where the consumer is wrong and trying to vent steam and anger in an unjust manner. And for your company to turn around and say they will not take a complaint off the internet, no matter what. It really is upsetting to type in my business name on the internet and see this complaint be the first site listed in all its negativity. And I wonder how many other people have seen this and how it probably has hurt my business severely. In a court of law, you are presumed innocent until proven otherwise. But here, you are allowed to post anything negative, even if completely false and potentially damaging to a business and its employees and their families, without proof. This is very unjust.

Some part of this story seems odd.

In response as both a customer of the Fish store and car repair shop:

My experience with the companies in question has been nothing more than trying to get a better deal online with fish stuff and in the case of live animals, there is still going to be a fish store.

My experience with turbo's in CA is that they're are off limits in terms of street legality.  I wanted to get that done at another shop in my dreams when I won the lottery, but they informed me about it being "Not street Legal".  There are some things you can do and the more ambitious would want a experience mechanic and someone well versed in how much potential could realistically be reached to do things like sway bars, mufflers, and what not.

The shop is now one area over with a much larger garage and to the best of my knowledge the fish store is no more, pity as fish tanks offer a lot of ambient moisture out here in the desert.

I would repute this on the basis that it isn't even current, may no longer be meant with the sincerity that it was wrote, could involve other factors, and doesn't involve work typical of what I expect anyone can afford these days in terms of funding their own private race team.

German Performance seems fine this go around, just don't think that they change the laws when they want to.  It's more likely a shop for legal aftermarket parts and basic repairs; a win win: inspired workers and inspired clientele.
