A "parts dealer" called Great Northern Auto Parts contacted me to offer to sell me a part I needed after I submitted a parts search request through a website called www.getusedparts.com

After they'd taken my money, they sent nothing and started ducking my phone calls, and ignoring my voice messages and email. An Intenet search (Which I know I should have done first!) revealed many similar complaints about them, and a telephone call to their local police found that the police are well aware of them.

When I realised I was being ripped off, I went to GetUsedParts.com to let them know. I found that the site includes a member forum where users can post questions and comments. There were two seperate threads concerning Great Northern Auto Parts, with a number of posters complaining that they've been ripped off. I contacted the site operator and told them that they were providing this scam artist with new victims even though their own forum contained so many complaints about him, and they basically 'blew me off' with a comment that they 'don't get involved' and that they're 'just like a search engine'.

I told them that they weren't like a search engine because they had passed my personal info on to this individual, not the other way around, and they ignored me.

Not only that, but when I went back to the member forum, the thread full of complaints about Great Northern had been removed - I guess GetUsedParts.com doesn't want it's site visitors knowing that they're going to have their contact information passed on to a crook so he can steal from them.

So, if you're looking for an autopart online, be cautious of vendors that contact you through GetUsedParts.com - not only do they apparently do no screening (Remember even the police where Gt Northern is located know about them, as does the BBB) they actively participate in concealing warnings about scams by removing the postings from victims from their forum.

I understand how getusedparts works.  While I think it's a bit shady for them to remove the comments, I also think that most of the recyclers on there are honest.  My suggestion would be to look at each response you get individually.  By that I mean narrow down the people you are thinking of buying from, then research each of them.  You can look on here, BBB.org, etc.  That should weed out the scam artists.
