Gex international, sold bad/wrong items, no directions, no customer support
I purchased a VW engine kit from Gex international, www.gex.com, The kit arrived with no instructions. After assembling the motor with the Gex engine kit, and after only 500 miles, the Cam shaft gear was worn out and filled my oil with aluminum particles. I dissambled the engine to find this problem, all other components were in good condition.
I contacted Gex and they informed me that the cam may not have been the correct one for that particular motor and that I should have know this before assembling the motor. They informed me that I would have to buy another cam shaft and pay shipping on it.
At the time of the original engine kit order, I gave Gex all the info that they requested for the kit, no mention was ever made of camshaft gear sizes differences. Now I have an added expense of purchasing a cam shaft and all the nessasary pieces to reassemble the motor.
I can only recommend NOT to do business with Gex international. My experience with them has been bad, and I feel they did not hold up there end of the deal.

VW Engine Rebuilding 101
#3REBUTTAL Owner of company
Sat, October 14, 2006
It is not standard practice in the industry to teach a customer how to rebuild the engine as part of the sale of an engine rebuild kit. This is not something that can be done with an 'instruction sheet'. Books have been written on the subject.
A retail customer should not buy an engine rebuild kit from GEX or any parts store or rebuilder if they have no experience rebuilding an automotive, or in particular a VW engine. If you do not know the case align bore size or the cam size prior to ordering and are guessing at it, there will likely be a failure.
We do offer complete turnkey engines for customers that have no rebuilding experience.

GEX is in my eyes, a company that stands behind there work. I am a engine builder there and i see warranty moters come in, and they are striped down to the bone and every part is inspected, so they can figure out the problem and then they fix it. i do not own a vw but my next car will be a vw and when i go to buy my engine i will make sure i buy it from GEX. GEX has a very good warranty. I have no reson to lie.
