I am 1000 away from my loved one and calls are all we have. I maintain a phone number in the same state, trying to keep call costs down. What I don't get is the average 30 minute call from a state prison costs about $1.50 through Value Added Communications, with a $7.95 fee each time you deposit funds. $25 always got me several 30 minute calls. In jail though, with GTL, I pay $25 for just under 15 minutes for 1 call.

First, in jail, you need to talk to attorneys and family just putting your case together. You NEED that communication. While I know most everyone in prison is "not guilty" MANY people in jail will not be convicted. They really were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but it often takes months for the entire process, taken away from family for no fault of their own.The jails are the ones giving GTL the contracts that financially "rape" us customers. It's their fees or no calls. Why would the jails allow this if they aren't getting steep payments back from GTL?

The prisons don't use them and that $1.50 for a 30 minute call seems to be making them enough money to stay in business.GTL fees are beyond outrageous but, looking back on here seeing complaints from over 6 years ago I know nothing will change. At the very least the jails should fess up and admit their portion of the profit in this so that those living there, as taxpayers, can at least get some comfort in the rip off they are forced to endure.
