When I met the Trimbles, I was so struck by their love for God, love for people and their commitment to ministry. We moved to a rental church auditorium and then to the school auditorium where his wife worked. Then to an office park, with a space for worship and church offices. We moved again to a larger rented space with plans to build a building across the street. We broke ground with ceremonial shovels one Thanksgiving in 2005.

A fund-raising program was introduced to the congregation. People were asked to make commitments and "make more room" for the others who would come, if we would sacrifice. People were asked to give their tax refunds, refinance their homes, and "bust open some CDs." Jon James was brought in to "invest" the donations and help people reach their individual financial goals. People rolled over their retirement funds into JW James & Associates and in turn, James promised profitable returns flipping commercial real estate and to make a contribution to the building fund out of the profits. I later discovered that James was being investigated by the SEC. His company was seized and ordered into receivership. In addition to the money that individuals invested with James, Trimble invested (or so he says) building fund donations with James. At least $500K was lost in this scheme.

i resigned my membership after this information came to light and a conversation with Trimble that was less than convincing.

What a sad and disgraceful ending to something that began so beautifully. Sometimes I think that it really did start beautifully and other times I wonder if it was a scam from the beginning. It's hard to believe that anyone who preached "love as a core value" could hurt others with so little regard for the financial, emotional and spiritual damage that he caused.

My experience from the 1980's working with Trimble and other activist of that time was I only had true respect for Tony Massengale, of those I was working with he was honest and was a man of integrity.  At that time, each was connected to various black ministries.  The political cyclone of that time was TELACU, SCOC, UNO, EVO, VOICE, MALDEF, Brotherhood Crusade and United Way.  Chasing money and using race in politics was the norm 28 years ago.  Some activist were clean coming in, clean going out! Others had sorted histories.

Any time a church starts asking for more than 10%, red flags should come up and investors should look in to the past of those doing the asking.  Never assume God blesses the affairs of men.  We all have internet access these days and there is no excuse for not checking first before investing over tithing.

Whats missing in these post, is Alton's past before he became a minister.  I worked with him daily in the 1980's and think maybe an investor should look at his past history before investing in him.  He was not a minister when I knew him and all I saw was a womanizer.  How he became a minister is a shock to me.  Investment and religion is a dangerous mix.  Don't take my word for it, look at his early years. He was involved in SCOC when he entered the ministry.

This is an example of a good church gone bad. I was a member of this church from 1998-2004. I remember when the Spirit of the Lord was in control, and high praise was the order of the day. I joined as a backslider and rededicated my life to the Lord because of the worship in the church, and was active in the drama ministry for the 6 years I was a member. We used to meet at a school. Things changed when the church moved to Carson and the ministry began to grow.

Slowly but steadily the amount of time spent in worship decreased, as the amount of people increased, and there was more concern for getting a bigger building and having an extra service. Things began to feel rushed. It didn't happen all at once, but it felt different. Church started to get crowded and the sancturary was full, and there were people in the overflow. So it was a good idea to break down the walls and make a bigger sanctuary, so that everyone could worship together. People contributed, little by little we could see progress, and it was a congregational effort. Then when that work was completed, it seemed like the Pastor was not satisfied with that, and wanted even more. That is when things really started to change, and no amount of praying would help.

I remember the income tax refund requests, which seemed strange (I did not contribute as I was not in the position to do so) posted everywhere. In my opinon, it was a little off-putting and presumptive to do this, so I chose to igore them and give as I was led. I remember the Money Management Classes, which appeared to be a good idea. But since I was in school, I didn't have time to attend. The Pastor was concered about people having a good credit rating and good FICO scores so they could buy property etc. and I thought that was great. But apparently there was a hidden agenda.

When the spirits of Greed and Pride get in, watch out! Those two spirits destroyed this church. I remember a lot of the subtle messages that were being sent out in church bulletins, when everything started to point towards 'A Time to Build'. Instead of the Word of God being put up on the walls of the sancturary, there were posters up with those words. The messages began to change, everything was about money. They even stopped sending out birthday cards, because I was told by the church receptionist, that 'We are focusing on the Build-Out'. No more ministry, I guess.

I didn't let anyone come to my house to play tapes of the church financial plan, I was too focused on getting out of school. Anyone who didn't listen to the tape could not have Thanksgiving dinner with the Pastor and his family. It began to be an 'Us and Them' church. Many things happened, the last straw for me was when the Pastor got rude with me one afternoon over something that someone did to me at church, and he didn't want to hear my side over theirs because, after all, they gave a lot of money. By the end of 2004, I wrote my letter and moved on.

I had a dream about Glory Christian Fellowship in 2006 in which a large grave marker the size of a church was sitting on a lot, there were no windows and no doors. There were many smiling faces outside, just floating in space. I asked God what the dream meant, and He said 'The building fund is going to be the death of that ministry'. Some people don't believe God speaks in visions and dreams, but He does and He will.

Now it has come to this. It is sad that these things are true, another ministry rocked by scandal, not by someone coming into the church to do dirt, but a ministry torn down by the Pastor who stopped listening to the Holy Spirit and focusing on satisfying his flesh. Look at all of the people who have been harmed and turned off from church. Look at the ridicule being brought to God's Name. He preached the Word with conviction, but didn't follow his own messages. I have since joined another church and am happy to be there, but I will never step foot inside that building again. I cannot. It would be like walking over dead men's bones... ICHABOD! PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE LOOT --PROSPERITY GOSPEL VICTIMIZES AGAIN

#8Consumer Comment

Mon, January 19, 2009

THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL TEACHES GULLIBLE FOLLOWERS WHO WANT TO DO THE RIGHT THING THAT THEY NEED TO GIVE ONE TENTH OF THEIR INCOME TO THEIR CHURCH BECAUSE THEY ARE GIVING IT TO JESUS OR GOD OR WHATEVER SINCE IN MANY OF THEIR BELIEFS, JESUS IS THE SAME AS GOD....

AND THE MORE THE GIVE, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL GET BACK IN RETURN.
SO THE POOR SHEEPLE ARE CONSTANTLY EXHORTED TO GIVE UNTIL IT HURTS, GIVE ME ALL THAT MONEY FOR GOD OR WHATEVER THE SCHEME OF THE WEEK IS... AND WHEN THE PEOPLE RUN OUT OF MONEY AND THERE ARE NO MIRACLES OR BLESSINGS OR HUGE CHUNKS OF CASH FORTHCOMING FROM THE HAND OF GOD OR ANGELS OR IN SOME OTHER MIRACULOUS WAY AND THEY CAN'T TITHE ANYMORE -- THEY ARE DISFELLOWSHIPPED AND SENT ON THEIR WAY WONDERING WHAT HAPPENED TO THEIR BEAUTIFUL RELIGIOUS DREAM MINUS THEIR LIFE SAVINGS OR A SERIOUS AMOUNT OF ASSETS.

THE ONLY LEGITIMATE GOSPELS MOST CHRISTIAN CHURCHES RECOGNIZE ARE MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE AND JOHN, I LOOKED IN MY BIBLE AND IN MY TORAH AND I FAIL TO SEE PROSPERITY LISTED AS A GOSPEL OR ANYTHING THAT TELLS CHURCH LEADERS TO SUBSTITUTE MONEY AS THE BASIS OF THEIR FAITH.

THESE PEOPLE TURN MORE PEOPLE OFF TO WHAT COULD BE A BEAUTIFUL RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE BY THEIR GREEDY, DECIDEDLY UNCHRISTIAN BEHAVIOR AND GIVE THE ATHEISTS SO MUCH TO WORK AGAINST THE FAITH WITH, YOU HAVE TO ASK WHY THEY ARE STILL PROFESSING TO BE CHRISTIANS WHEN IT IS REALLY THE MONEY THEY WANT TO SAVE --OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY SAVED INTO THEIR OWN POCKETS -- AND NOT SOULS.

THIS EXPERIENCE REMINDS ME OF THE EXPERIENCE I HAD WITH THE TELEVANGELIST IN FARMERS BRANCH, TEXAS MANY YEARS AGO.

I HOPE THIS PERSON DIDN'T LOSE TOO MUCH MONEY IN THE SCAM RELIGION.
