Long story, but stick with me if you are considering adopting a dog, especially from the South:
My husband and I recently went through a horrific experience with adopting a dog from the South via Petfinder. The name of the Rescue Organization we went through was "Good Dog Rescue". Their address is in Enfield, CT but the dogs they are placing are from the South.
We thought we were getting a Lab-Shepherd Mix. She turned out to be a Lab mixed with Pittbull and it was disastrous. (I should have prefaced this by saying that we researched this well--we knew adopted dog's behavior can be unpredictable as they adjust to their new enviroment, new owners, possibly a long plane/car ride.) We spent 6 long stressful days trying to deal with and understand this dog who was extremely aggressive towards other dogs, other people (including a toddler) and basically anything that moved.
Now after finally finding (what we thought) was the perfect dog, we were faced with making the agonizing decision to return her. There were many reasons (Boston regulations surrounding pittbulls being one good one), but ultimately we returned her because I could not physically restrain her when she became aggressive.
We received very little support from GOOD DOG RESCUE when we contacted them about the situation. They basically laughed at us for thinking the dog was a pittbull mix (even though this was verified by our vet).
The thing that makes my blood boil is that the dog is now back on the Petfinder website and her profile has not changed. In other words, this could happen all over again to someone else (and more importantly, the dog).
After this experience we can only assume GOOD DOG RESCUE is out for the money, given that the dog is back on Petfinder and they had no problem keeping our adoption fee of $500.
By the way--I'm not ANTI-pittbulls, I know they are good dogs if they are properly cared for and trained from the very beginning, but this wasn't the case.
I'm curious, has anyone else out there had a similar experience??? Who did you contact to report the organization? I've googled it every which way and I have no idea who to contact or what I can do to stop this from happening again...
