We got totally scammed by the people at Good Dog Rescue. We found a dog of theirs on Pet Finder we liked named "Lady" so we contacted them to begin adoption. Lady is a sweet looking tri-color terrier mix who reminded us of our old Jack Russel, Cecil.
After an involved process where we sent them photos of our house and references, they agreed to let us adopt her and sent us the contract which we filled out and returned with $525 adoption fee which helps fund the organization and pay for transport.
My wife had to work on the big day, so I traveled 3 hours to NH to pick her up. The dog they sent was an all-white American bull/Lab mix looking nothing like the one we had specified on the contract.
I refused the dog and when I wrote them they accused us of rejecting the dog they sent because I didn't like how it looked. They refused to speak with us over the phone to negotiate a solution or discuss the problem. They said they had done lots of things they never actually did to validate the adoption. They returned $100 and refused to allow us to adopt the dog we actually wanted even after we offered to split the cost of the other dog's transport. So they kept $425 and we got nothing but a lot of BS and heartache.
To read their website they seem like a good organization but they are awful to deal with. Avoid them and work with one of the many reputable rescue organizations out there.
