I purchased a mini bulldog 2 years ago from www.gottilinesouth.com. He's been a great companion and a lot of fun compared to my full size bulldog I used to have. He had much more "play" in him. Chased balls all day, loved to play with water or empty plastic bottles.

He wasn't quite "miniature". He ended up at 43 pounds when the website say they get to 30 to 35 pounds. I figured he was just a big boy. He also had very tall legs which may of the been the reason he ran around much more than a fullsize bulldog. His head and tail looked like a bulldog but the body looked like something else.

I had hoped he wouldn't have the health issues that the full size bulldogs have. He seemed to be ok when I first got him. No sign of heart murmur, allergies or any problems. I did have problems with diarea but that went away with natural dog food. Within a year he needed eye surgery to pull the eyelid away from the eye to stop the lid from scratching the eye. (Typical for fullsize bulldogs).

This past month we found out he had lymphoma (cancer) and decided to put him down instead of going thru chemo once a week for 3 months. The cost was going to be around $4500, it had a 90% chance of putting him in remission but that only lasted a year on the average. Why put a dog thru that? Seems strange that a dog that just turned two would have cancer already.

I would love to get another mini bulldog some day, except with all the info thats out there now about these dogs and breeders, how could you possibly find a good one. I wish this info was on the web two years.

I'm sorry for your loss after such a short time

As I said I am sorry for your loss, in the future, you, and whomever else in interested in 'mini' bulldogs should simply look for an honest bulldog breeder first of all. A close friend of mine has been breeding for a very long time, her dogs run the gambit - from 45 pounds on up. They are VERY healthy for bulldogs (average 12 to 15 lifespan even) and beautiful. Last year we had a tiny little girl, she was not growing anywhere like her littermates. We ran every test we could to ensure there was not a health problem to cause the size difference, she was completely healthy. She is now about 27 pounds I believe, and turned a year on november 15th, 2008. Moral of the story, none of them, not even Emma, has ever been sold as a MINI bulldog. I also believe that several of these 'mini's' I have seen have way to many characteristics of French Bulldogs in character and conformation, and never forget, it can be caused by a serious health issue like a liver shunt as well. Buyer Beware, like Bulldogs weren't difficult enough before?
